Maria,
I do have an update on our agenda.
- Bumsoo Kim, Software defined storage in cloud: automatic storage tiring, storage virtualization, KT
- Chanhyun Yoon, Cloud collaboration system and management, KAIST
- Eui-Nam Huh, [title: TBD], Kyunghee Univ.
- [Speaker:TBD], Cloud Brokering Service, ETRI
- Open Source Case Study in Cloud: Jaesuk Ahn, Kirk Kim (individual participants)
. Jaesuk Ahn: KT’s case study to support large scale public cloud / Kirk Kim: SDS’s open source cloud case study on to support massive mobile echo system
As you suggested, both KT and Samsung (SDS) will present case study on clouds, especially Samsung will talk about massive mobile echo system and cloud.
Only difference is they are presenting it as part of their open source community activity, not as an official business activity from Samsung company.
That is why I put “open source case study in cloud” as a sub-session title.
Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend video call this time because of an urgent work at my company.
If you have any question or feedback, please send me an email. I will be able to respond immediately anytime today.
Thank you.

Hi Jay,
Please find below my answers:
1. they do not have an enough knowledge on H2020, therefore, not aware of any potential opportunity it can create.
Well.. now is the opportunity to learn what H2020 is and how they can find opportunities. This is the whole purpose of the event
[Jay Ahn ]
Yes, exactly. That is why I proposed a small talk session with individual contributors on their work. By including them on workshop, we will be able to make a sort of evangelist to spread words about H2020 after the workshop, either to the company they are working for or people in the similar tech sector.
2. some of them says it is a bit too early to talk about what they are doing as an official position, but can talk about that informally.
What we ask is an exchange of information that is public. Cant' they present work/projects on Clouds? For example, a presentation from Samsung on their current activities in Cloud (e.g., mobile cloud, etc.) and their future prospects will be very interesting. Are there any other cloud providers in Korea? Or any Cloud service providers?
[Jay Ahn ]
The biggest public cloud service provider in Korea is KT (Korea Telecom). I can speak of the current activities and future plan of KT regarding cloud computing service.
In addition, I do know Samsung has an interesting cloud use case in mobile and smart TV domain. I will ask if they can present on that.
I guess you are proposing to add the open source speakers in addition to the ones that you have put in the agenda.
Are the following speakers; still confirmed?
Target Korea speakers (only provided as examples, may change)
- Sungin Jin, ETRI (CSB, focus Cloud Brokering Service)
- Jaesuk Ahn, KT (focus Carrier-grade Cloud Data Center)
- YoungHee Lee, KAIST ( Pervasive Home IoT Services over SDN controlled by Cloud)
If yes, then we can accommodate the session on open source and dedicate a slot of 10-15 minutes.
[Jay Ahn ]
I apologize for late update. We have updated version speakers.
- Bumsoo Kim, Software defined storage in cloud: automatic storage tiring, storage virtualization, KT (confirmed)
- Prof. Chanhyun Yoon, TBD, KAIST (confirmed, waiting for detail info on the topic)
- Prof. Eui-Nam Huh, TBD, Kyunghee Univ. (confirmed, waiting for detail info on the topic)
- TBD, Cloud Brokering Service, ETRI
Based on this list, I think we can add a small talk from Me (Jaesuk Ahn) and a senior developer from Samsung, 5min each to introduce activities of KT and Samsung on Cloud Service as well as how we accommodates open source technologies.
I will try to set the final agenda before today’s video call.
See you tomorrow at the videoconference?
Maria.

Jaesuk is my first name. You can call me Jay.
Basic background for having open source session is actually not about introducing open source activity.
While I am contacting companies in Korea to participate Korea-EU workshop, some of companies did not show an interest on participating workshop.
1. they do not have an enough knowledge on H2020, therefore, not aware of any potential opportunity it can create.
2. some of them says it is a bit too early to talk about what they are doing as an official position, but can talk about that informally.
However, an researcher/developers in those companies has showed an interest to participate workshop as individual, not officially with company name attached. If they can participate Korea-EU workshop, they can be a positive force to spread an opportunity to participate H2020 program to their own companies. That is basic reason I started thinking of hosting them under open source community name, not as an each company they are working for.
I do agree the time limit of the session would be problem. How about giving them 3min each to talk about their own research and development activity, something like lightning talk we usually do in conference. If we set the session, there will be maximum 3 people participating under the name of open source community, so it will eat up about 10min total. Welcome to have any question or opinion on this.
Thank you.

Dear Jaesuk ( is this your first name or family name? ),
I have no problem with that. The only problem I see is the time limit of the session. Currently each speaker has no more than 10 minutes for the presentation. The aim was to exchange info on similar projects between EU and Korea and to find the common areas for collaboration in research under H2020. Open source can be mentioned for sure but I am not sure how we can accommodate this given the time limitations. What do you have in mind?
Maria.

Dear Maria,
Thank you for your quick response. As you said, lots of organization / project are developing open source technologies and contribute to open source community.
I think it would be interesting to include a short session on activities regarding open source technologies in cloud computing area.
If I can include a short session presented by “open source community members”, Although the proposed session will be not lead by a single organization, it would be possible to include various kinds of newly developed architecture and features by several individual open source contributors in Korea.
I will be looking forward having your opinion on having this kind of session during our workshop.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jaesuk Ahn

Dear Maris Tsakali,
It is great to hear from you.
I totally recognize your point on keeping momentum going with many active participants. I also think it is positive thing to have.
I will look into your link to understand their research topics. I think it will be 4-5 participants from korea; currently confirmed topics are cloud broker, virtual storage on cloud. I am trying to include participants from various sectors; research center, telecommunication companies, IT companies.
I will send you detail information when i get back to my desk (i am currently traveling for the weekend.)
There is one thing I would like to have your opinion. In cloud computing area, we have found out that emerging open source technologies plays very important role, expending its boundary to actual commercial product effectively. For example, openstack is now more than cloud infrastructure platform project including various parts of cloud eco system. In Korea, there has been strong interest and activity around this open source thecnologies.
Will your side of participants be interesed if we include open source technology topic in worksbop? If you can get some feedback from participants on this, it would be great help for me.
Thank you.

Dear Jaesuk Ahn,
I am back to the office now so we can start preparing the cloud session more effectively.
As I had mentioned to you from the EU side there was a lot of interest to participate to the cloud workshop. As you will see there are 6 speakers that are eager to participate. Even though this number is bigger than the suggested 4 speakers from each side, I think we should keep the momentum going and accommodate all of them. On the other hand, if you can manage to get 4-5 speakers from the Korean side that will be ok too. We may need to reduce the time of the presentations but the idea is to have in the session those researchers that really want to cooperate.
I will ask the EU speakers to send us information similar to the IoT session that you suggested (please see attached template). You amy use the same one for your speakers.
Meanwhile you can have a look at their project web sites to get an idea.
Target EU speakers: (6 speakers have confirmed)

Geir Horn, U. Oslo (PASSAGE)
Ewald Quak, Sintef (BROKER@CLOUD & CLOUDFLOW)
Patrizio Dazzi, CNR (CONTRAIL)

Dear Maria Tsakali,
Thank you for your response. I am also looking into finalizing candidate speakers from Korea-side.
If my understanding is correct, we will probably able to have total 8 (eight) people to speak during cloud computing session.
Having said that, Ideally speaking, we might want to have four speaker from EU and four speaker form Korea for this Korea-EU workshop.
We probably need to discuss about how we make a best combination of speakers to address many interesting & unique talk in cloud computing area.
I am sincerely asking if we can have this type of discussion sometime soon.
I will prepare for the candidate list from Korea by early next week so that we can start on the discussion.
Please let me know if you have some suggestion, concern, or question on any topic regarding this session moderating.
I hope we can work out greatly to have a very good cloud computing session during Korea-EU workshop.
I have attached what IoT (Internet of Thing) has prepared for session schedule for the reference. I thought It might be worth looking at what other session did.
Thank you.
