Hi Team,

Here are the individual assignments for the week! There isn't too much to do left on the research end besides cleaning up our great work so far.  If there are any detail research assignments that we had discussed in class but are not written here, please take the initiative to get those last bits finished.  For those who wanted to do some advanced planning or have preference on report topics, the Final Report Outline has been uploaded onto the course drive (Th_EESC or something like that).  Feel free to message me if you have any requests for report topics, otherwise I will divide them up fairly according to everyone's focus topics & will let you guys know when finish.  For reference, Izzy has shared the minutes on Courseworks.

Everyone: Make sure all powerpoints and materials are posted for Ariel to cut & paste onto a draft of the final powerpoint presentation.

Martin: (1) Outreach Facilities to see if they will give us the information (2) Cross-Check Izzy's Source-Conversion Data

Izzy: (1) Lamont Simulation

Sarah: (1) Find out energy consumption of Black Rock Forest for past few years (2 buildings)

Jin: (1) Money Saved per unit per year & Software Analysis after get data from Pat (2) Suggestions on where to install GSHP (3) Slide on Hybrid vs. Regular GSHP performance & Slide on Weather Protection

Ariel: (1) Put together draft of Final Presenation (2) Designate Assignments for Report

Tsechu: (1) Continue contact with Barnard Communications & see if they will help us with the posters (push them and get Martin to ask if needed).  If not, need to meet with Liora and Ariel during the week to finish the posters by Thursday.

How was the field trip to Lamont? Did Pat answer our questions?

Sarah has all the notes with the specific data and answers to our questions. Off the top of my head, all buildings are either T-8 or will be replaced with t-8 and the newer buildings are using t-5.
He said 2/3 of all computers on campus are macs and 1/3 are pcs. (pcs are used more by admins)

I took photos of the area where they're planning on putting the solar panels. I'll upload later.

The only question we asked but didn't get an exact answer was the whole skewed numbers of the cafeteria but he said with questions like that, just email him directly. So Liora, can you email him your exact question?

Pat gave us a bunch of files which will come in handy in our calculations. I think Sarah will upload them when she is free.

All of our question

Hey all,

I posted the floor plan and some utilities information that Pat gave us in the client files section on courseworks.  There were two other files (.qpw) that I can't open, so if anyone else can, let me know and I can give you the flashdrive.  Here are some other notes.

- Electricity: $0.12 per kWh    Gas: $1.29 per 100 cubic feet

- Fume hoods: average size is 5 ft, 750 cfm, costs ~$10,000/year to run one (~$10 per cfm per year)

- Solar farm area: 0.5 acres cleared, 3.5 acres forested, 75% oak, 25% maple (my best guess), area removed from campus --> low impact, still need to get company name from Pat

- GSHP: Oceanography building is probably best suited, vertical pipe field could be put under parking lot that Pat wants to redo anyway, new porous asphalt would help reduce runoff

- Lightbulbs: mostly T-8, Comer and Core Lab have T-5, either 26 or 33 watts

- Computers: 2/3 mac, 1/3 dell

- Pat does not recommend motion sensor light switched for laboratories mostly for safety reasons. Suggests that signs for light switches and fume hoods would be more effective here.

- Pat guesses that OBS could have increased energy usage due to an increase in occupancy

Thanks Sarah!

Tsechu, do you know if BC communications is able to help us with making the posters?  If so , we need to get all of the poster text to them ASAP to give them enough time to finish before the final presentation.  And if now, you, Liora, and I should get on this asap!

Izzy, could you give us a briefing on your meeting with Julio?

I went to bc communications at 1-2pm is my only free hour during the day, the person responsible for design Lisa was not there. I left my email and name at the front desk, but Lisa still hasn't responded to me, it been more than a week and she hasn't responded. I'll go to her office again tomorrow 12pm-2 pm, if she doesn't respond to me or if she doesn't say yes, I'll ask Martin to intervene.

I went to the Communications Office again and she wasn't there and I emailed her again, and she hasnt responded. Im afraid sheprobably thinks im really annoying by now.

I drafted an email for Martin so that he can send the request to her. Please feel free to add anything to this email, I don't know if it is worded with irritation bc I'm feeling annoyed right now:

Dear Lisa,

I am writing to express my class EESC BC3300 Workshop in Sustainable Development's interest in possibly acquiring access and permission to use some of the impressive designs that your office created few years ago with the theme of encouraging ecofriendly acts on campus. This class is under BarnardCollege's Environmental Science deparment. I understand one of my student contacted your office few days ago and recently. My students are currently working on a project to make CU's Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory more Energy Efficient and your help would be very beneficial to the class.

Thank you very much for your time. I look toward to your response.

Kind regards,

Prof. Stute
Chair of Barnard College Environmental Science Department
