To the Lamont Community,
We hope that you and your families have come through the storm without
injury or other setbacks. We are aware that many of you may be suffering
through power outages, dealing with damage to property, or responding to
other personal challenges. These should be your priorities. Please let
us know if there is anything we can do to assist.
We are going to open the campus tomorrow, November 1, to staff who wish
to come to work on a voluntary basis. We want to make it clear that
there is no requirement for you to come to work; the campus remains
without power and Orange and Rockland cannot give us a timeline for
restoring service. We will try to accommodate those of you who wish to
return to work, but there are several constraints.
Pat O'Reilly, Dick Greco, Lenny Sullivan and their crew have been
putting in a monumental effort to keep critical facilities operating and
prepare for an uneventful return to normalcy. The campus is relatively
free of debris, with the exception of a few trees remaining to be
cleared. The natural gas and water lines to campus are fine.
Unfortunately, we expect to be on emergency power for the foreseeable
future.
Some of our facilities staff are reporting various road closures and
detours on the local roads in Bergen and Rockland counties. We could not
find an open gas station today, nor could we find an open one with fuel.
Please be aware of these constraints if you decide to drive to Lamont.
We will operate the shuttle on the following, reduced schedule tomorrow,
November 1:
Leave Columbia (120th St. stop): 8AM, 12PM with possible intermediate stops
Leave Lamont: 1PM, 5PM with possible intermediate stops
This may change depending on bus availability, road conditions and
traffic updates, so please monitor email and our notification services.
The campus servers, ethernet and wireless network are operational.
Building status is as follows:
Partial power in Monell (no overhead lights, some outlets on backup
generator)
Full power in Oceanography, Geoscience, Old Geochemistry (go figure),
Paleomag
Limited power in Seismology/Marine Bio, supporting the computer machine
room and some equipment. No lights.
No power in: Cafeteria, Day Care Center, Instrument Lab, Tree Ring Lab,
Administration (except for telephone system), Borehole, Lamont Hall
Comer has full power but the internal air quality is not reliable
(diesel smell). Please avoid Comer if your presence is not essential.
The generators are burning about 1500 gal/day and need to be refueled
3-4 times/day. Our vendor's fuel depot has not been replenished, but we
are expecting another delivery tomorrow. We will know late Thursday
(tomorrow) or early Friday whether we can make it through the weekend
with the fuel in the tanks. We are working with Columbia to find another
source of diesel. Note: Monell will not be affected since the generator
is fueled by natural gas.
WE WILL PROVIDE 12-24 HOURS NOTICE IF WE ANTICIPATE RUNNING OUT OF FUEL
FOR THE GENERATORS.
As always, please let me know if you need clarification or other
assistance. Our thoughts are with those who are in the midst of what
will be a difficult and lengthy recovery.
