Hellooo Team!,

Hope everyone had a fun and relaxing weekend and were able to do some of the really cool things going on in the city. I myself went to Boston this weekend for a women in business conference and met Donna Karen (Whoop!).  Thanks Jin for taking and uploading the minutes... I have a few reminders and mid-week updates for you guys:

Tsechu (and future presentation givers)- Please prepare 10-15 powerpoint slides for your presentation (approx 1 slide per minute) and upload any readings or supplements you would like us to read, if any, before Tuesday night.

Liora and Izzy- When doing research on what constitutes an energy star rating, please think about the most worthwhile endeavors or projects that could be implemented to lower the rating the fastest and with lowest cost (as well as more monetary options).  Also, please summarize your findings on a page of bullet point notes for the class.

Izzy (and future snack bringers) - Thanks in advance for helping us out with notes (and snacks yipeee! ) for next class.  Maybe you'd like to bring your laptop? It would save you the trouble of transfering written notes later. Also, no need to spend more than $10 on recess time snackeroos :)

Sarah and Jin- Please formalize your assigned research by writing up a summary sheet of bullet-ed notes and copy for everyone in class!

In addition to your individual assignments for the week, everyone will be responsible for doing their assigned reading on Knovel about the different methods to conserve energy & resources (some of the more technical parts would be ok to skip).  I’ve divided the readings up as even as I could by subsections but if anyone feels like they were assigned more than they can manage, feel free to let me know.    Basically what we are looking for are what types of improvements would be most practical and easily implemented in the Lamont buildings (labs, offices, communal areas, restrooms, dining halls, etc.) so it would be ok to skip through the more dense, technical sections as long as you get the main concepts.

Ch. 1- Liora

Ch. 2-  Izzy

Ch. 3&4- Sarah

Ch. 5&6- Jin

Ch. 7&9- Ariel

Ch. 8&10- Tsechu

As far as format,  we should each do a brief summary (couple sentences) on the  3 or 4 of most important improvements that we were assigned.  For example, since Sarah is assigned chapters 3 & 4, she will do a small briefing on the 3-4 highlights she found in the 2 chapters combined.  After the write up, please assess a few other factors by rating each topic with this system (think Zagat guide):

Cost   [ $-$$$$]

Time [*-****]

Significance of change [+-++++]

I know that this email is a rather long one, but thanks everyone for your hard work! Martin was very impressed with the progress we made at last Thursday’s meeting and I believe that we can only get better from here J  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to send me a message.

-Ariel

Hi Everyone,

I realized that I assigned the Knovel Readings without giving proper instruction on the title of the book (I thought Knovel itself was a book, but it's actually an entire database!).  Since there are hundreds of texts on site, I will need to search them individually for the right title and will email out the link.

Apologies for the slip-up, gang! Please resume with your individual assignments and if you do not receive an email from me with the link by 6 PM today, I will take responsibilities for the section summaries in time for open house.  Also in case any of you were curious to flip through the site to help you with your research or assignment (it is knowledgable on literally all topics of sustainability.. I'm hooked!), the portal can be accessed by typing "Knovel" into Columbia's CLIO Library search.

Thanks for all your hard work and see you all tomorrow!

-Ariel

Just an FYI in cases there are problems with opening Knovel:

Username & Pass is your uni
Otherwise, you can access the site by Courseworks: Files & Resources -> Background Papers -> Energy Efficiency General
