Hello, Workplace Writing SIG members! I just got an email from the Cs' program people saying that early-bird registration ends Jan 18. I'm pretty sure you don't (technically) have to have registered if you'll only be attending our SIG meeting virtually, but if you're coming in person or attending several things, you can register now and get the discounted rate.
I'm also writing to let you know that various issues have arisen in my family (a new and ongoing health problem for my husband, a son-in-law who's being deployed, a granddaughter who'll be needing more care from Grandma Rentz, etc., etc.) that make it necessary for me to leave this group and this wonderful, important initiative in you guys' hands. I am really happy about the interest this SIG has generated among 4Cs-ers and ABC-ers and grateful to Geoff for getting it on the 4Cs program for yet another year. Please keep up the good work!
Toward that end, I believe that Geoff would appreciate some help with leading this SIG. A co-chair could help the SIG plan SIG-sponsored workshops, like the half-day one that Gina, Matt B., Matt G., and I ran a couple of years ago, as well as SIG-sponsored panels at the Cs and at ABC. There's also the need to keep ABC-ers informed about the SIG's activities via the ABC newsletter, and it could be good to find other ways to "market" the SIG.
FYI, my effort to have the first meeting of a 4Cs SIG at ABC this past October went down in flames (only one person besides me attended, Dirk R.--thanks, Dirk!), but I think it would still be a good idea for someone to pursue a way to enable an ABC committee to help support the work of this SIG. The Marketing and Membership Committee (where the idea for this SIG originated) has an ABC Affiliate Subcommittee (
https://www.businesscommunication.org/page/marketing). I spoke with its chair, Virginia Hemby-Grubb, when I was at ABC, and it seems like having a representative of this SIG on that subcommittee would be the perfect way to keep ABC abreast of this SIG's activities while also offering support for the SIG.
I wish you all well in your teaching endeavors and your efforts to keep an interest in workplace writing alive and well at the Cs!
All best,
Kathy Rentz
