Hi, all--

I'm wondering what you think of my subject line. Up to this point, we've been operating as a subcommittee in ABC's Marketing & Membership Committee, but since this is such an important initiative on its own (and, truthfully, the main M&M initiative I care about), I believe it's time to split off and be our own entity. That way, we'd appear in the ABC program as a separate committee (rather than being buried within the M&M meeting) and possibly enlist more parties who are interested in this work. Our goal, as you know, is to become a Standing SIG in 4Cs, so we need to keep up our momentum. (I also expect that 4Cs attendees will want our pre-conference workshop to be available for the foreseeable future.)

FYI, we have an MLA Liaison Committee that manages/promotes our participation in the annual MLA conference, so the committee I'm proposing would be a parallel to that.

The ABC conference/Board meeting is coming up soon, and I'd like to get our proposal considered if possible. Please comment on this topic and let me know how you feel about it.

Hi, again. Chris Brown sent me the message pasted in below. He chairs the MLA Liaison Committee and thinks that, given our goal of having a 4Cs Standing SIG, we should be our own ABC Committee as his is. I will be glad to write the proposal (with Geoff Clegg's help!) to send to the ABC leadership--but would you kindly let me know by the end of the day today if you do NOT think this is a good idea? I don't want to run roughshod over anybody's counter opinion.

Thanks,
Kathy

Here's Chris's message:

That sounds like a good idea.

I am chair of the MLA Liaison Committee. In our group, the chair is the point of contact between the committee and the MLA. The MLA has me listed as the contact person, though they also include the previous chair in communication as well. I am responsible for making sure that panels are posted to the MLA's conference links by the required due dates. I am also the presider over our conferences at the MLA.

I'm not sure what the CCCC Subcommittee's relationship is with the CCCC at this point. If we become a Standing SIG, most likely, there will be a need to have a chair who is the principal point of contact with the CCCC. I think it would be good to have the committee stand on its own, like the MLA Liaison Committee, in optimistic preparation for being accepted as a Standing SIG.

Best wishes,
Chris

Heidi sent me a great Q: What's the difference between an ABC SIG and an ABC Committee? The answer is that the latter needs to be approved by the board and also must provide an annual report to the board, whereas a SIG is a more informal group that doesn't need to do any reporting. So that raises this Q: Which do we want to be?

I think we want the status and formality of being an actual committee, because we will have a regular job to do each year (unlike, say, ABC's Rhetoric SIG) and thus will need to be tended somewhat by the ABC leadership. Also, our group is more parallel in its purpose/responsibilities with the MLA Liaison Committee than with a SIG. Just as we hope the Workplace Writing SIG will become a permanent fixture at 4Cs, we want to be/become a permanent fixture of ABC (they might, however, start us out as an ad hoc committee, the way the Academic Environment Committee started out).

Are you guys in agreement? Do you see any downside of requesting to be made an actual committee?

Kathy,

I don’t see any downside to being an actual committee except for when the conference goes to an international site.

Hello, Kathy and all.

Just an idea: is there any possibility of combining with the MLA liaison committee to share some of the administrative duties (particularly when, as Geoff mentions, the conference is abroad).  Maybe combine to be an external organization liaison committee of sorts?

I haven't thought this through entirely, but I'm heading into meetings all day and thought I'd toss it out for discussion.  Otherwise, I don't have reservations about an independent committee.  I agree that the formality of the committee will help keep the momentum going each year.

The MLA Liaison Committee and 4Cs Liaison Committee need to be two distinct entities because they were work with two separate organizations with entirely different administrative structures and conferences.

Best wishes,
