Hi, SIG members, and happy new year. Let's hope 2021 will be healthier and happier than the year we just escaped from!

The program chairs at 4Cs have let us know that the conference will be virtual again this year and that there won't be room on the virtual program for our SIG meeting. We can and should still meet (and send a report on the meeting to the program chairs afterwards), but we'll need to do so outside the conference dates and on a platform of our choice. Geoff has kindly volunteered to oversee the planning of this online meeting, so you'll be hearing more from him about that.

Meanwhile, the planning for our pre-conference workshop on transitioning from the teaching of comp to the teaching of workplace writing is moving forward (but it's possible that the workshop will be pushed outside the conference dates, too). Matt Baker, Matt Gilchrist, Gina Genova, and I just had a Webex meeting to discuss the scope, structure, and content of this workshop. Each of us will be messaging you soon to ask for your input into our different sections, which are, roughly,
  • the different academic settings that workplace writing teachers can find themselves in, and the special challenges posed by each,
  • how and why comp teaching differs from workplace-writing teaching, and what strengths/experiences comp teachers can leverage when making the transition,
  • guidelines and options for structuring workplace writing courses and designing assignments, and
  • how to assess student work and how and why to assess your course/program overall.
We also plan to put together a packet of resources that the attendees can take away and share. So please be generous with your wonderful ideas, advice, and materials when we come calling!

Many thanks,
Kathy

Hello, Everyone!

With the continued pandemic and the winter weather that has adversely affected much of the country, I hope you're all safe and well! My name is Matt Baker, and I'll be helping out with the pre-conference workshop at CCCC this year. As Kathy mentioned in her email below, I'm reaching out to see if you might be able to help us gather a few teaching resources for the workshop.

We'd like to put together a packet of course-structure ideas, assignment ideas, teaching resources, and grading resources. To help us put together this packet, would you be willing to share any of your teaching materials—or any others that you're aware of—that fall into these categories:

-Course syllabi (i.e., schedules of topics, readings, and assignments)
-Assignment ideas, assignment sheets, or assignment descriptions
-Cases or any other teaching resources
-Rubrics, peer-feedback resources, or other grading aids

If you are able and willing to share, you can send those materials to me directly at matt...@byu.edu or to the whole group copied on this email. In your email, could you please indicate whether you're okay with us disseminating your materials to workshop attendees.

Any resources or ideas you can provide would be much appreciated.

Best,

Matt
