Welcome to the SIG! Here's what we did in Pittsburgh, and here's what we're planning for Milwaukee!

Greetings, new 4Cs Workplace Writing SIG!

 

Thanks to you, our SIG is off to a great start. We had 15 people at our SIG meeting in Pittsburgh (one being a virtual attendee), and another 8 expressed interest, including Crystal Shelnutt and Chris Brown, who were part of our originating 5-person team (an Association for Business Communication subcommittee that also included Geoff, Kate Wills, and me). That’s 22 folks so far!  And as word gets around, we expect a lot more additional interest, because there are lots of comp-people-turned-biz-writing-people out there who need a friendly and helpful community.

 

After folks introduced themselves, Kristen, Geoff, and I talked a bit about the Association for Business Communication as an important resource for workplace-writing teachers. We then began making plans to have a bigger presence next year at 4Cs in Milwaukee. Here’s what we came up with:

 

1. Propose to the 4Cs’ program committee that our SIG meet again next year.
2. Organize and propose a pre-conference workplace-writing workshop, designed to help comp people make the switch to teaching workplace writing.
3. Organize and propose a SIG-sponsored panel for the conference program.

 

FYI, the deadline for proposals is Monday, May 6--yeah, about 6 weeks from now!

Kristen Getchell and Ruby Nancy have volunteered to lead the development of the workshop. Kristen is also game for working on the panel, but if someone else wants to (help) lead that effort, please be our guest(s)! Geoff and I will lead the effort to get the SIG on the program again for next year.

 

I’m gonna confess that, before I rejoined 4Cs this year, I’d been AWOL for many years. So I particularly welcome any and every one’s knowledge about how 4Cs works and how best to pitch our ideas to them. I’m coming at this effort from the ABC side, so I’ll tend that piece as necessary.

 

Geoff created this Google Group, and soon you’ll be hearing from him that he has set up a Google Site for us. (I’m not sure what the difference is, but he is, so we’ll do what he says!)

Count me in for helping to organize or implement a panel. I, too, have been AWOL from CCCC for an age even while I've chugged away in an English department. But I'm doing a turn to incorporate a long-term interest in material culture studies into research on the physical and technical environment for workplace writing, so I'm coming back through ABC to "comp-people-turned-biz-writing-people." Happy to engage in a friendly community.

I am new to Cs and ABC and business writing in general (teaching of it, anyways).  I'm interested in the ways in which WAC/WID principles are able to develop more effective rhetorical knowledge while integrating it with some of them sweet sweet transferable and integrated professional skills. I could try to present something at a panel, but it would probably be a little anemic having nothing in the works as of now. I am probably better equipped to help with a workshop.  I am happy to do whatever I can to help including some recruitment to some other disenfranchised (?) colleagues. 

Also, I'm new to Google Groups.  So when I reply to the wrong thread to the wrong person for the wrong reason, forgive me.

I'm also happy to help out with a workshop.  I too am new to the field and would welcome the opportunity to work alongside more experienced colleagues.  

I do a lot of WAC/WID/WI work at my institution as well (I'm the coordinator).  Would anyone else be interested in a workshop session / panel discussion that would bring business faculty together with the writing faculty who teach for their departments? At my uni, the business faculty teach writing within their content-based classes, but they don't teach the courses that focus on writing per se -- professional and technical writing (undergraduate level) and business writing (graduate level).
