Hello, everyone, and thanks for setting up our meeting, Geoff! An issue we need to sort out during our SIG meeting (perhaps with posts to this forum beforehand) is how to create an official presence for ourselves in ABC. Right now, the team behind this CCCC Workshop Writing SIG is a subset of ABC's Marketing and Membership Committee. But if we want ABC to continue to be the steward for our efforts to connect to CCCC, we need to be either a SIG or committee within ABC so that we have better stability and visibility. I'd like to propose that we consider asking ABC's first VP, who's in charge of authorizing the creation of ABC SIGs/committees, to authorize the creation of a "4Cs Liaison SIG," one of whose main jobs would be to sponsor the CCCC Workplace Writing SIG (but the liaisons could take other forms, too, such as getting SIG-sponsored panels/presentations on the CCCC program, in much the same way that ABC's MLA Liaison Committee does this). But certainly we could consider other options for how to become "official" in ABC.
FYI, here's the text from ABC's Operational Guidelines that explains the requirements for ABC SIGs:
The Association’s members pursue a variety of professional objectives through voluntary Special
Interest Groups. Each SIG is responsible for selecting an appropriate designation for itself and for
developing its own agenda. An interest group is required to submit a yearly report on activities and a
plan for the upcoming year. No evaluation of members is necessary. This report should be submitted
electronically to the Executive Director and the First Vice President witin 30 days after the annual
conference concludes.
A Special Interest Group must secure prior approval from the Board of Directors to represent the
Association to external groups or persons.
A Special Interest Group may be initiated in either of two ways: (a) the First Vice President may
designate a member as coordinator of an interest group and ask her or him to convene a group, or (b)
ten or more members may elect a coordinator and apply to the First Vice President for recognition.
Once a group has been formed, it is responsible for electing its own chair.
An interest group will retain official recognition so long as (a) the group meets during the annual
conference and (b) at least 10 members (identified by name) indicate that they wish to be affiliated
with the group.
