I have a Plantronics USB headset that I have been using on a number of computers for several years with no problems. I have had a new laptop (Dell Latitude 5520 running Windows 10 Enterprise Version 21H2 (OS Build 19044.1415)) for about three months and have been using the headset on the same USB-A port without problems until two or three weeks ago when the volume became low. Even with all controls at 100% the volume was lower than I prefer, making online meetings difficult.
Two weeks ago I tried plugging the headset into the other USB-A port and it worked normally again; until this morning when the volume was again low. I tried switching between the two USB-A ports but volume now remains low on both of them. I also have one free USB-C port and as I have a USB-C to USB-A adapter I plugged into that and the volume is again normal.
As the headset works normally on different ports (and computers) the problem would appear to lie with software or drivers. I have tried uninstalling drivers for the Plantronics Audio 628 USB controller, disconnecting the headset and reconnecting it so the driver will reinstall but this has had no effect. Can anyone suggest other possible solutions?
We can see that you are using 11th Gen intel PC which is running IntelSST driver which has known bug with USB audio devices. Please disableit and then restart PC, then update realtek driver manually from PCmanufacturer's website and then test performance.
I've also faced that issue while ago. I found a solution. This is the one that worked for me. I'm using windows 11 operating system and the laptop is Asus TUF fx507. The solution that worked for me was going to settings->system->sound->more sound settingsIn that menu select the device and open the properties for it. Under general click properties, click the button that says change settings, then select Driver-> Uninstall device, and be sure to check the box that says attempt to uninstall device drivers. Once it was uninstalled I removed the USB and then restarted my PC, then when I plugged my headset back in the sound was back to normal and much louder.
I've tried looking for updated BT600 drivers, but I can't seem to locate anything. The BT600 driver appears to be issued by Microsoft, with version 10.0.22000.1. I have also had a poke around in Plantronics Hub but can't seem to see anything related to audio quality.
I expect Intel will give me the run around and say contact the computer manufacturer though it really is an Intel issue with how Intel has developed the Smart Sound Technology software. The computer manufacturer has to live with Intel design choices.
I am with a company that has developed sensor products that use the USB Class 1 audio protocol. The products return vibration data instead of audio data but show up a USB microphones as far as Windows is concerned. I have to try to provide support to customers of our products to try to get them to work. So this issue will occur across all computer manufacturers.
Unfortunately, some computers have added Smart Sound Technology for USB Audio that inserts itself in front of the standard microsoft audio drivers that work well with our device. The first symptom is apparently disabling support for 24 bit audio. Second symptom is not working with the Windows kernel streaming audio interface causing application to fail.
The Intel SST driver is wrapped by the audio codec driver and then provided to the OEM, therefore, there is no support from Intel Customer Support. To find out if Intel SST can be disabled in your USB device, our best recommendation is to contact the OEM for further assistance.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to disable Smart Sound Technology for a specific USB audio device. Smart Sound Technology is a system-level feature that is designed to improve the audio quality of devices that support it. Disabling it would affect all devices that use it, not just your USB audio device.
However, you may be able to work around the issue by using a different audio interface for your sensor products. You could try using an external audio interface that does not rely on Smart Sound Technology, or a different USB port on your computer that does not have Smart Sound Technology enabled.

My laptop was 'upgraded' by work last week and now I have a problem with the AG hands-free driver - it connects via Bluetooth but I don't hear any sound (the stereo headphones still work just fine). The headphones connect via Bluetooth when it boots up just fine, but every time I select the AG driver I hear the beep that makes me think it is reconnecting again. Initially I thought this was an issue with MS Teams but even with that shutdown, the same problem is happening. So far I have tried:
Try going to settings->Devices->Bluetooth and other devicesUnder that, there will be Audio, select the audio device and select on remove device. After that pair and connect with it again.
Since you said that your laptop was "Upgraded" by work, does this include any new software being installed, or did they install new drivers / flash the bios? Alternatively, if they have used a basic windows 10 image, this usually installs old / basic drivers that don't always fit what the manufacturer expects. (This is the case for atleast Dell laptops) This has, in my experience at my current work, caused external devices to behave weirdly on laptops.
I would suggest trying to downgrade to the last stable version you had of your bluetooth driver earlier. What model is your laptop? Try to find it's newest manufacturer specified audio / bt driver on their website.
While I work I usually listen to music over headphones. I have Jabber set to use an audio notification when I get messages. When receiving a new Jabber message while using headphones, for some reason Jabber defaults to using the built in laptop speakers and NOT my headphones. To make things worse, while the jabber tone is playing it also redirects all other streaming audio such as my music to the internal speakers so for 1-2 seconds everyone around me can hear the jabber tone and my music. After the jabber tone is done the streaming audio goes back to my headphones.
I have noticed that when this happens briefly I will see two audio devices listed when I click my volume control icon. It seems as if Jabber is defaulting to the built in speakers audio device despite the headphones being connected as the primary device. I am using Windows 7 and the latest audio drivers. The headphones are 3.5mm so they do not have their own audio driver like USB headphones do.
To get around this on my previous laptop I had to disable all Jabber sounds. It seems I will have to do the same with this until the bug is fixed. I also wanted to note that I never had this issue when using WebEx Connect. It started once we switched to Jabber at my office.
I see your suggestion and while this will do as a work-around until a real fix is implemented this creates another problem. On days I am in the office I want it to default to headphones. On days I work from home I want it to default to the laptop's speakers. I don't want to have to change this option multiple times each week.
My question: can I select to different devices for audio out, so that the user can hear the softphone ringing (the warning sounds) via the pc-speaker and then, after he has picked up the phone the sound comes only from the headset?
Using Jabber version Version 14.0.0.55549 Build 305549 and I've tried the ordering of speakers but it doesn't help. This happens on any bluetooth devices I have. I've tested with my BOSE Bluetooth and when I get a Jabber message, it kicks them off and defaults back to the laptop speaker. if I leave it alone and another message comes in, it jumps back to the bluetooth speaker again. Its mental!!
I have the same problem, and am trying to find a permanent solution for my headphones on this forum with no success. I have tried your methods on Settings and Audio on Cisco but now, I can't even find my bluetooth headphones on the Speaker list nor Microphone list!
Have you set up (routed) the inputs and outputs in vst connections of your audio card? Sounds like you need to select the M- Delta Audio card and route the outputs where the phones are connected. I am not familiar with the M-Delta card but normally you would select outputs via vst connections and select the sound card and its associated outputs where the monitors are connected. Just a thought
Do you not have a headphone socket on your monitoring amp? What you are trying to do cannot be done with your set up. You would need a sound card with multiple outputs, or at least a dedicated headphones output.
Cubase can only use one audio driver at a time, preferably ASIO. When you listen to youtube with your usb headphones you are using the usb headphones driver which is different from your Delta card driver. Your on board sound is also a seperate device.
It can overwrite any existing usb audio device plugged into your computer when the update that triggers it goes off. (I have not found rhyme or reason as to what specifically triggers it causing audio problems. Though this most recent windows update has seemed to trigger a lot of people using various devices of different brands and models.)
From what I've read it's due to an issue where it causes an incompatibility, then defaults itself instead of whatever device was being used then refuses to check for said device because it can't detect the other device. As such, it effectively makes your existing device "disappear" from your computer entirely. In my case, that device is my HS60.
