The benefit of large print books is that the text is larger and the book is easier to read for people with eyesight problems. One of the best sources for large print books is your local public library but the selection is probably going to be limited to mostly romance and thrillers. The online used book world does a wonderful job of making large print titles easy to find.

Obviously, large print books need a larger font size than normal. 16 point is generally considered a minimum size, though 18 point is recommended if at all possible. Having decided on a minimum font size, there should be no text in a smaller size. Page numbers, copyright information, etc should all be at least as large as the main body text. Headings should use a larger font size, as with normal print, but nothing should be smaller than the minimum size that you choose.

It is also important to consider the font face. A sans-serif font should be used, and if at all possible, avoid using italics, underlining, or blocks of capital letters. I recommend the Tiresias LPfont. This font has been specifically designed for use in large print documents, and can be freely downloaded from the Tiresias website. (Note that the contents of the Tiresias website is in the process of being moved to theRNIB website).

In general, plenty of white space makes a book easier to read for those with sight issues. Single spacing can make it difficult to find the start of the next line, so use 1.25 or 1.5 spacing instead. Similarly, indented paragraphs can make it hard to find the start, so use block paragraphs instead of indented paragraphs.

Most print books use full-justified text, so that the right side of the text is lined up along the right margin. However, this leads to uneven gaps between words. For this reason, left-justified (or ragged-right) text is more readable, and so should be used in large print books.

So glad you are printing for demographics for young adults! A question most people, including myself have is how can you fit an entire book into large print when they look like they have the same number of pages?

Thanks for sharing stats from Project Tomorrow! Another question librarians and educators ask is if large print books are still valuable in the age of e-book technology and font size?

Bobby also commented that he noticed the page color in the large print book (bright white) made reading easier than regular print (grayish). His comment about looking up and getting back into his book faster led me to capture video of students reading large and regular print titles. I wanted to know what they thought and if I could see an actual difference with their reading between the texts. The numerous improvements with large print shocked me.

A student who was referred to me because he stuttered when reading aloud, suddenly stopped. Another girl, who was a proficient reader, slowed down and began reading with expression. Several other students displayed physical differences; they often held books to their faces, but now sat back in a relaxed position. One student no longer needed to use her as a finger as a visual guide. All of the students were also able to find their places faster when interrupted.

Soon after, I decided to create a large print collection in my school library. Here are five steps I used that can be duplicated in virtually any school to successfully launch your own adventure with large print:

As the topic title suggests, I would be interested in buying WoT books in large print and have no idea where I can get them from or even if they exist, so am humbly asking the wonderful community of dragonmount.com if they know of any place I could procure said books?

I have been on the WoT wiki, ebay, amazon and other sites of could think of to no avail. I also tried waterstones and asked a salesperson in there but they only seemed knowledgable about the latest d list celebrities biography >.

Dragonmount is a fan-maintained website dedicated to Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time fantasy series. It is an online community of people from all over the world who have come here to experience the series to the fullest.

No doubt, large print books are a well-known solution for visually impaired readers, and those readers are typically seniors. Unfortunately for large print, being so good at solving this one problem for this one audience has led to a narrow, and sometimes inaccurate view of the usefulness of the format overall.

You may be noticing a trend by now, but that is also false. Thorndike Press publishes more bestsellers and bestselling authors than any other large print publisher. We currently have over 4,000 titles to choose from with 200+ new titles added monthly. Large print books are the best kept secret! And why? My collection of large prints are so popular! Yes, our senior patrons love them but so does the general public. Special Tip: For those of us who wear glasses, we can read LP books at night WITHOUT glasses. I guess the secret is out!

I have been a large print book reader for 20 years mostly because they were so much easier to read but lately I have noticed the print is just barely larger then small print and have been disappointed when ordering online. Does anyone know of a way to find out publishing house online by book title?

Hi A J,

While normal print books range from 10-12 point font, large print books range from 14-16 point font. Thorndike Press is happy to announce they are on the larger side of the range, coming in at 16-point font! The large, jet-black type has been known to help struggling readers too. Large print books may not only be good for people who are visually impaired and older readers. According to a new study, reading titles with larger text benefitted students, helping them develop stronger reading skills and feel more comfortable as readers.

According to the latest results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) testing, almost two-thirds of 4th and 8th grade students in U.S. schools are reading at a basic or below basic level[i].

The study was conducted by Project Tomorrow, an education nonprofit, on behalf of Thorndike Press to investigate the impact of students reading large print-formatted books on their reading engagement and achievement levels. Nearly 1,700 students in grades 3-12 and 56 teachers and librarians across 15 U.S. elementary, middle and high schools participated in the study.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book.

The book measures in at almost exactly 9 by 6 in., with a thickness of 1 in. For comparison purposes, the size is comparable to the Great Adventure Catholic Bible, though just a hair thinner. It would easily fit in a backpack, computer bag, satchel, etc., unlike some of the large-print editions available from other publishers such as Loreto or Baronius.

Hi Father,

I have to agree in that I have found my sweet spot for devotional reading in a 1950 DR- Confraternity Bible from PJ Kennedy and sons edition. The physical size of the volume, the text layout and binding is perfect for me.

Personally, I just settled on an original 1965 Oxford Annotated Bible, because it got an imprimatur before there was ever an RSV-CE and the New Oxford Annotated was really the only study bible that ever really worked for me. This way, I get my to have my Catholic Bible cake and eat the Oxford Annotated too. ?

Seniors with weakening eyesight can continue their love affair with reading with large print books. These books come in a variety of genres and contain large print; typically a size 14 font or larger. Most of these books are reprints of the original size, which was much smaller. Popular best-sellers of virtually every genre are usually reprinted in larger fonts, as are some magazines.

Thorndike Press is considered the world's leading publisher of large print books; Thorndike Press first began this practice in 1999. The company continues to publish 1,500 new titles in larger font each year.
