Whether you plan or plunge, Scrivener works your way: hammer out every last detail before typing a word, or carve out a draft and restructure later. Or mix your methods and do a bit of both. In Scrivener, everything you write is integrated into an easy-to-use project outline. So working with an overview of your manuscript is only ever a click away, and turning Chapter Four into Chapter One is as simple as drag and drop.

If it was a perfect world, Scrivener could be a standard for all new computers, both Windows and Mac. I will most definitely spread the word and quite possibly move ALL my writing to Scrivener, including my networking research. Thank you for making such a wonder application.

However, my live/session word count is no longer working. It's stuck at 0 for the live count, and 21 for the session count. If I go into Statistics, it gives me an accurate total word count, and if I go into Project Targets, it shows 0 for the live count, but an accurate session count. The writing history also shows accurate session counts.

Hi! I've been using Dropbox to sync my Scrivener files across my Macbook Pro, Mac Mini, iphone and ipad. This has been working beautifully for years. I updated Scrivener on my desktop, and now dropbox seems to not sync some of my Scrivener files. I've opened some with no problem, but others I get a cloud icon next to the file and when I click on it, it does something for a moment then the cloud returns. Those files with the cloud are clearly not syncing with my ipad/iphone or Mac Mini. When I attempt to open them on my MacBook pro, I get a message saying a helper app isn't working but no further info to help me figure out what to update or re-install.

Thanks for the response. I was typing my last reply when you posted yours. Scrivener didn't change how they manage the files. Had they, at least one of the unaffected ones would have stopped working, too, as I had used and synced it successfully across several devices after the Scrivener update. I have no clue why some of the files stopped being available offline and others in the same folder didn't. But, I selected the folder and told it to make everything available offline. That seemed to fix the problem.

I've got this same issue, and the "make available offline" designation (which has worked for me in the past) isn't working now -- it's not appearing as an option for one (most recent) file and not appearing to change for another (the original file which I tried to copy). The latest file doesn't have all my Dropbox features when I right click on the file name in Finder (that lets me choose to make available offline, etc.).

and also for fonts (in libreoffice and scrivener, or wherever) that look like the ink on the typewriter is running out, disable embedded bitmap fonts in /.config/fontconfig by adding a fonts.conf file with this:

I have created custom commands that speed up the process of switching between the apps to make it less painful. In your situation, I would create commands like "copy to wordpad" (copies the highlighted text, switches to WordPad, and pastes the text so that it can be manipulated in a friendly environment) or "paste all to scriv" (select all the content in WordPad, Cut, switch to scrivener, then paste).

Paste and Match Style treats the pasted text as if it were plain-text only in as in far as it removes inline formatting, hyperlinks, italics, etc. BUT it takes on all of the characteristics of the text surrounding the cursor position where it is pasted. That is, it matches the style of the working document.

If you genuinely want plain text, i.e. neither the formatting of the original style, or the formatting of your working Scrivener document, you will have to follow the advice above and paste into a plain text editor, copy again, then paste in Scrivener without matching style.

I just purchased the most recent version of scrivener for windows and the icons are still very small and difficult to read. I was hoping this problem would be fixed in the current version. I followed the instructions listed here, but it did not change anything. Do you happen to know of any additional updates that address this issue? I would like to use scrivener on my surface pro 2017 but will not be able to unless I can manage to enlarge the icons.

Thanks for the reply here Matt. One other question on syncing with Scrivener. Does Aeon Timeline sync with the .scrix project or to the external sync folder? I was under the impression, however wrong that might be, that it synced with the .scrivx project itselt. However, after working in Timeline, when I return to Scrivener it will always indicate that changes were made in the sync folder and asks if I want to sync with the external folder.

You can add any other folders or documents you find helpful while working on your story. For example, I almost always end up with a Settings folder to keep track of images and descriptions of buildings and places in my story world, as well as maps.

Thanks, Phillip! My Productivity file is a document where I note the date, how much time I spent working on the manuscript, how many words I wrote (if any), and add notes about what I worked on (which scenes, research, editing, etc).

You could also create a document reference from each scene to its scene card for quick access without having to search the Binder. This post talks about how to create references. It focuses on creating external project references (like web page links), but you can create an internal document reference with the same process. Just choose Document instead of Project References, and then add an Internal Reference from the drop-down menu. -in-scrivener/

Thank you, thank you so much! I just lost 500 words written today (so not so bad) after two power outs! I still had the 500 words after the first power out, but not after the second! Bizarre! Thank goodness the back-up feature was working and I found the version I neede din one drive ?

A scrivener (or scribe) was a person who could read and write or who wrote letters as well as court and legal documents. Scriveners were people who made their living by writing or copying written material. This usually indicated secretarial and administrative duties such as dictation and keeping business, judicial, and historical records for kings, nobles, temples, and cities. Scriveners later developed into public servants, accountants, lawyers and petition writers, and in England and Wales, scrivener notaries.[1][2]

The doctrine of a "scrivener's error" is the legal principle that a map-drafting or typographical error in a written contract may be corrected by oral evidence if the evidence is clear, convincing, and precise. If such correction (called scrivener's amendment) affects property rights then it must be approved by those affected by it.[4]

It is a mistake made while copying or transmitting legal documents, as distinguished from a judgment error, which is an error made in the exercise of judgment or discretion, or a technical error, which is an error in interpreting a law, regulation, or principle. There is a considerable body of case law concerning the proper treatment of a scrivener's error. For example, where the parties to a contract make an oral agreement that, when reduced to a writing, is mis-transcribed, the aggrieved party is entitled to reformation so that the writing corresponds to the oral agreement.

A scrivener's error can be grounds for an appellate court to remand a decision back to the trial court. For example, in Ortiz v. State of Florida, Ortiz had been convicted of possession of less than 20g of marijuana, a misdemeanor. However, Ortiz was mistakenly adjudicated guilty of a felony for the count of marijuana possession. The appellate court held that "we must remand the case to the trial court to correct a scrivener's error."[5]

I tried to create a novel scriv file and I succeeded in importing in Storyist. Then I tried to import my previous complex file and the import was made apparently correctly. I do not why, but now the import is working. There is some temporary problem. I am not able to say what is changed, not having restarted my Mac or made any other change.

Outside of the office, Scrivener stays busy with her family. She has two daughters and loves spending time with them. Scrivener also has a passion for working out and staying fit. She is an avid runner and has run several half marathons (as well as a full marathon).

Also inside that "Inspector" view is a place to set a status for each of your written sections. I didn't even realize this was available until I'd used Scrivener for a couple months, but it's helpful when you're working with larger documents.

Take a Snapshot before major edits: Scrivener has a pretty simple versioning system called Snapshots (Documents > Snapshots) that allows you take a snapshot of your document and compare back to that version after you make edits. This comes in handy if you decide to make major edits and they don't end up working out.

If you're a writer of any kind, Scrivener's worth a look. It's a bit overwhelming at first, but it's intuitive once you get used to how it works and what it can do. Plus, even with all its features, it's still a lot faster than Word when you're working with larger documents.

I been using Dropbox with Scrivener for years for writing and other projects. Scrivener has a feature now where it warns you if it detects a project is it open on another computer It is a little annoying to remember to sync my laptop after working offline before opening it on my desktop. Most of the time there are sync issues I catch it right away and can recover (load laptop version and save difference). However it much easier then always working off a USB file I find.

Scrivener does this automatically for you, every time you close a project, but it's a good idea to give it a little more thought. For example, if your working project and its backup copy are both on your hard drive, the backup won't help you if your laptop goes up in flames or down into the pool.
