Definition listsdo not use leading characters like bullet points or numbers and areoften used in glossaries or descriptions. Lists can also be nested.Nested lists are lists that contain other lists. For example, youmight want an ordered or bulleted list nested within another numberedor ordered list.
You use the List Properties dialog boxto set the appearance of an entire list or for an individual listitem. You can set number style, reset numbering, or set bullet styleoptions for individual list items or for the entire list.
There are three other buttons in the Text category of the Insert panel that you can use to apply list tags to text. The li button marks text as a list item; the text must be within a bulleted or numbered list. The other two buttons are used for definition lists. The dt button marks text as a definition term, and the dd button marks text as a definition description.
You can change numbered list and bulleted list properties in Dreamweaver. Choose between five types of numbering, as shown in Table 4.3. For bulleted lists, you can choose either a round bullet (the default) or a square bullet. There are no properties to set for a definition list.
You can indent lists within lists to create nested lists. Because nested lists do not have to be of the same type, you can create, for example, a numbered list with an indented bulleted list, and you can have multiple levels of nested lists within one overall list .
It's going to be a CSS issue. CSS can change the numbering/bullet style, and even turn it off altogether. Using Firebug, inspect the element and look at the CSS styles on the right to see what styles are being applied to it. Look for one called list-style.
While the list-style-type is most likely the problem, especially if you've used a reset stylesheet, you might also make sure that the margin-left/padding-left of the list is large enough that the numbers can fit into the space.

A bulleted list places a bullet character before each new paragraph, while a numbered list places a number and a separator before each item. If a paragraph is added or removed from a numbered list, the numbers change accordingly. InDesign CS3 allows you to change the style of the list characters with different fonts and indent spacing.
One of the easiest ways to create bulleted or numbered lists is to type the list first, then add the bullets or numbers. You can also add bullets and numbering to paragraphs, causing each new paragraph to begin with a bullet character or number.
From the Command Bar, click the icon associated with the list type currently applied (Numbered List or Bulleted List ).
The numbers or bullets are removed from the text.
InDesign allows you to change the style or starting number of a numbered list. A numbered list will update itself when a list element is added or removed; however, only consecutive paragraphs are numbered sequentially. If you want to insert text without a number between list items, you must use the Start At mode option to continue sequentially numbering paragraphs after the non-numbered one.
If you selected the Start At mode, in the Start At text box, type the number you want the list to start at.
HINT: Changing this number is useful when you want to start a new set of numbers immediately following another set of numbers or when you want the numbered list to continue after a non-numbered paragraph.
One of my visitors wrote to ask how she could start a list with a number other than 1 (the default),without having to insert all the item numbers manually. That is, she wanted to use the automatic numberingfacility provided by HTML, where each point in the list is given an incremental number even if youadd new items into (or delete them from) the middle of the list, except that she didn't wantto count from 1.
Note that even if youuseEnglish letters or Roman numerals to number your lists, the start number should still be specified asan Arabic numeral. For example, if you want to start your list using the Roman number "viii" (ie, 8),you will have to say "". The web browser will convert that 8 to whatevernumber system you have chosen for your list.
Instead, I just figured out which CSS rules had disabled the standard list settings, then deleted them. Now basic HTML lists work again instead of losing their bullets or numbers in the blue background on the right.
Though this method is easy, you cannot add bullet points using shortcut keys to an existing list and can only be added using number keys in the Numpad. You can only use the shortcut keys to insert a bullet point and then add the list.
Place the cursor in the destination where you want to add a bulleted or numbered list. Navigate to Home, click the arrow next to Bullets or Numbering. Click on a bullet to insert it into the destination.
