Hi,
I am trying to convert txt files for analysis.  I'm using the file utility and I have checked "into Unicode" and "curly quotes etc.".  However, when I click OK I get the message "FAILED" and it says 0 successfully processed out of 1.  Any idea how I can recitfy this?

Thanks,
Andy

Hi Andy

Can you tell me more about the kind of text file you're converting? For example, if you choose that file and then press the Check Format button before you press OK, you should get it analysed. https://lexically.net/downloads/version8/HTML/file_choose_window.html?anchor=unicode_test_in_filechooser explains.

Cheers -- MIke

Thanks.  I opened WordList, then File > New > Choose texts now.  I selected the file I'm interested in and used the 'paintbrush' icon to test the files.  The first time I did that it said that the file was in a mixed format and asked if I wanted to convert it to Unicode.

I exited out of that dialog box, but I think it did the conversion anyway.  Because now the file size has doubled and when I test the file with the paintbrush now, no dialog box appears. Then I ran the file conversion utility and it says: 1 successfully processed out of 1.

So I think that's good.  Is the the right way to do it?  Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Andy

Hi Andy

Yes. You can convert it in the File Choose window, or using the Text Converter as you prefer.

The final test is whether you can process that text for concordancing or word listing.

The new WS8 64bits version is more tolerant and can process UTF8. It still prefers UTF16 as that way it can correctly hump to the right location in the source text file when desired.

Cheers -- Mike
