A full sequel, released in 2001, was rebuilt with a 3D engine, more interactive environments, more skills for the commandos, and new characters. Like its predecessor, it drew heavily from war films and titled its levels in reference to such films as "The Bridge on the River Kwai" and "Saving Private Ryan". The game received even greater praise.
During the game, players will have 6 different commandos at their disposal, though rarely all at the same time. Each commando has their own individual abilities and skills, enabling them to take on unique roles in missions.
Commandos 2 is a terrifically complex game at the best of times. You control a pack of commandos, oddly enough, fighting with the resistance against the evil Nazis. The game is played from an isometric perspective, and you control each character individually, using them in tandem to solve problems, outwit guards and complete mission objectives. On the PC, it was a bloody difficult but ultimately very satisfying game. On the PS2, the learning curve is like that cliff Tom Cruise was climbing at the start of Mission: Impossible 2, and the satisfaction fails to displace the player's pent up frustration.
Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines is a stealth real-time tactics game developed by Pyro Studios set in wartime Europe and North Africa. The game consists of 20 levels of increasing difficulty in which the player must control a number of individual commandos to complete various objectives (usually sabotage, assassination or rescue). Additionally, each level has a unique password so that the player can return and replay any completed level later.
I watched some speedruns for the first 3 levels and learned a couple things. I learned that I am way too meticulous about stabbing everyone and hiding bodies, and I learned that the gun is available when multiple commandos are selected. It looks like the usual way to start these early missions is selecting the whole team, firing off a few rounds into the air in celebration, then shooting anyone who comes running to see what the commotion is.
Take control of one of the commandos, team up with your friends and send the Sludge God and its horde of things-that-should-never-be back to the underworld. Choose the class that matches your playstyle, pile into your favorite ride, and unload an array of gunfire, grenades, special abilities, and freaking katanas as you save the planet.
The game has significant issues on modern systems out-of-the-box. In Windows 10 and newer, the internal compatibility library is assigned to a misspelled executable name (commandos.exe instead of comandos.exe), so the executable needs to be renamed to function properly and pass the DirectX 5 check on startup (already applied in the Zoom Platform release). Issues with game speed have several workarounds in the Essential improvements section of the article as well. Additionally, the retail version's installer is a 16-bit application and can not run on 64-bit systems; see Issues fixed for a workaround.
