Indeed. It's too bad they won't release the names of the actual drummers they flew to Cupertino to develop Drummer and the instruments it plays (Drum Kit Designer and Drum Machine Designer for electronic drums). They are some of the most in demand drummers in the industry.

I very much like Logic's "Drummer" both for its realism and for its convenience. It will automatically produce a realistic-to-me varying pattern of fills and embellishments, very much as a real human drummer might do.

I agree. I have only just recently switched to Logic but have dabbled in ezdrummer for drums previously in other DAWs. I really find that with drummer in Logic (or GarageBand) I can get something dialed in and fleshed out through an entire song much more easily than I can with ezdrummer and a library of midi patterns. However, with additional ezdrummer EZX add-ons I have a much deeper palette of drum sounds to draw from.

I don't believe you did! I think the first part to really understand is what des99 said, that "Drummer" is Logic's virtual drummer. Like its counterpart, a real human drummer, "Drummer" can come up with patterns, fills, play harder or softer, busier or more minimal grooves etc...

But then the final drum sound you get also depends on the drum kit the drummer is playing, the way it's mic'ed, engineered, mixed etc. And "Drummer" in itself doesn't have anything to do with that. By default, "Drummer" comes with some of the standard Logic drumkits, which you may or may not like, but really it can play any drum kit you want. Feel free to use a 3rd party drum sample library, your own samples, synthesized sounds, whatever you want. It just produces a MIDI signal that can trigger any MIDI instrument.

Logic's drummer is extremely good for what it does, considering it comes free. I think Apple could have made it a separate package and charged extra, but I'm glad they didn't. Besides, Kyle, Logan and Anders are really nice guys, and as session players go they are very cheap!

Another fantastic element of Logic Drummer is that it allows you to explore your options by auditioning different drum kits and virtual drummers. In other words, Drummer lets you preview how different drummers and kits interact and sound with your project.

At the end of the day, Logic Drummer is an amazing and flexible tool that can help you create some truly great drum beats. From its extensive library of drummers and kits to the ability to create custom performances, Logic Drummer offers a level of versatility that empowers you to explore diverse rhythms.

The text and pictures in this FAQ explains how to open EZdrummer in Logic 9,
but it works the exact same way with Superior Drummer 2,
Beatstation or any other virtual sampler from Toontrack.

Listen, I love playing with a live drummer. Some of my best musical partnerships have been with amazing drummers. But I love how Logic Pro gives me a virtual live drummer to inspire me and help turn my rhythmic ideas into reality.

To create a drummer region, select the pencil tool in the tracks area and click where you would like the region to begin. By default, drummer regions are eight bars long. If you want to change the region's size, drag the region's lower-left or lower-right edge to resize it. You could also split a region (making two regions out of one) by using the scissors tool.

Below the current drummer is the Drummer section, where you can choose the style and drummer character. Each style has several different drummers with names and headshots, and new drummers are occasionally added with software updates. Click the drummer you want for the entire track. The track regions and drummer editor are updated with the style of the selected drummer.

Below the drummer character focus area is the Sounds section. Although each drummer character has an associated kit, you can choose different kits independently of the selected drummer character. Click the lock icon next to the Sounds heading to change drummers without changing drum kits. Since Logic Pro first came out, developers have added new drummers and kits, and more are bound to be on the way.

At the bottom of the software instrument screen is a disclosure triangle that opens the additional settings shown in the figure above. In this area, you can adjust the volume of the drummer's percussion instruments.

POWER TIP: You can actually change drum kit manually from the instrument library, so that a specific drummer and genre of your choice is performed on a drum kit that you can also choose. It can be a drum kit plugin, or a sample library.

You can even use independent beat presets for the drummer on each region inside the drummer track. You will find these presets just to the side of the X/Y-pad, and the actual preset names will be different depending on the genre and drummer you have chosen.

POWER TIP: Since transitions are so incredibly important in music you might even want to convert the short transition region on the drummer track to customize the beat exactly as you want it.

POWER TIP: If you want to use the drummer as a workflow booster, for creating percussive MIDI parts in the rest of your music composition, you can simply (Option+Drag) a drummer region to another MIDI track, which will automatically convert it to a MIDI performance as well.

For example: Create a new track below the drummer and assign another drum plugin and kit. Then (Shift + Option-Drag) a drummer region to the new track below. Then you can mute the drummer track completely, and the new drum plugin that you dragged the alias region to, will still play the performance based on the drummer region.

However, it is not always working as expected, so you might want to double check. Also, if you change the track it follows, you need to refresh the drummer region, to make it update its performance accordingly.

Now, as with almost anything inside the drummer track, this feature is also region based. So you can have one drummer region be influenced by your bass track, and the next region by perhaps an ostinato strings track.

For example: I can use the drummer for adding fills to my epic cinematic toms. Or spicing up the high-end with stick hits on my Taikos, by using the hi-hat performance from the Drummer track, and so on.

Basically: I choose the drum part(s) from the kit, to create the percussion performance from. Then I choose the drummer, the style, shape the performance, and then I drag and drop the created region to the track I want to use it on. Then finally, I polish the MIDI in the piano roll.

Transitions and fills are so important in music, for adding that spark of change and anticipation, for something new that you will introduce in the next section of your track. That is why I often use a 1 bar drummer region to help me get a starting point for a fill or transition, that I can then option-drag to one or several percussion tracks in my composition.

Like Steely Dan's previous albums, Pretzel Logic was recorded at the Village Recorder in West Los Angeles,[3] produced by Gary Katz, and written primarily by Walter Becker and bandleader Donald Fagen, who also sang and played keyboard.[4] The album marked the beginning of Becker and Fagen's roles as the principal members of Steely Dan, and the pair enlisted prominent Los Angeles-based studio musicians to record numerous overdubs.[5] Jim Hodder, Steely Dan's founding drummer, was reduced to a background singer on the album, which instead features Jim Gordon and Jeff Porcaro on the drums. In addition to playing guitar, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter can be heard playing pedal steel guitar and some hand drums.[4]

But the best part of Logic Drummer is that it actually creates incredibly believable drum beats that feel just like a real drummer! It's definitely the easy way to create drum tracks that feel unique to your song, as you can quickly adjust the complexity and intensity of your beats bar by bar. You can then vary the patterns and even include how many fills you want. They drum fills adjust on the fly and feel really organic.
