Hello, friends!

I have an old site that uses a customized theme and it doesn't support threaded comments. The client really wants to start blogging and has an active community of people who want to comment and we've got to figure out the threaded comments thing.

I suspect we might be able to get it to work by hacking the code, but I'm skeert to take that on myself.

Anybody know of any work arounds for getting threaded comments to work in themes that don't support it? Any php engineers been successful in getting this to happen?

I found this thread: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/threaded-comments-not-working-1

Here is the site/blog: http://cognexusgroup.com/contact/blog/

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Celeste

Hi Celeste,

This might not be the answer you're looking for, but have you given thought to offloading comments to a plugin/service like Disqus? I use it on more than a few sites and it's been great. WP theme integration is a breeze, users can authenticate however they like, and threaded comments are there by default:

Plus it has features for discovery of related contents on your site, up-voting of quality responses and more. Just a thought since this is an old theme.

If I’m asking an inappropriate question, please rap my knuckles gently.

A domain name was offered on another list I belong to. It’s never been developed and there’s no audience — no website, no audience, right? I will need transfer it to the registrar I use (which is also my hosting company).

The owner asked me to make an offer. Not sure what to offer. What should I be considering to come up with a reasonable offer?

I see nothing inappropriate about this very practical question, Susan.

One thing you can do is go to Valuate.com and create an account. Then you can get an appraisal on the domain name you have to sell (or one you want to buy)  based on some simple questions.

You can get up to three appraisals done for free. I'm not sure what they charge after that.
I've used a similar service and found it very helpful.

The value of a domain without content is mostly subjective. A few things that can make a domain more valuable

• It’s short - a domain with 3 or 4 letters is valuable. 5 letters is better than 10 is better than 15, *generally speaking*
* Real words - this can trump the shortness, e.g., GrumpyCatAustin is more valuable than GCAustin. Real words can also help tremendously with SEO.
* Demand - <this month’s hot topic>.com might be valuable now, but may be worthless next month.

That said, it really comes down to what it’s worth to you and what you can afford. I own a bunch of domains I haven’t done anything with. I’ll get offers from time to time. There’s one that many people are interested in - if someone offered lots of money for it, I might just take it. OTOH, if someone had a really cool Make the World a Better Place kind of idea, I’d be inclined to hand it over at cost.

A friend has offered me a good business opportunity were I to take charge of two high-value domains he has had for decades and to monetize them with appropriate content. The topics aren’t my wheelhouse, but if they move you, I’d be glad to discuss how you might be part of the project and implement your ideas.

The domains are:
