Hey folks, anyone here using one of these plugin-based image compression utilities like WP Smush? I've got a few sites that can't get lower than a 50 score on google page speed tests because they're essentially portfolio sites with tons of full-screen image slideshows.

I'm not too concerned with these since their respective target audiences are design-oriented and likely have great bandwidth and huge displays (so says the analytics). Also, they're getting 70%+ non-mobile users and the mobile bounce rate is low.

Just curious, I guess, if anyone has experience with these and if they actually amount to any real savings/performance boost.

Cheers,

Hi Art,

Yes, and yes. You’re going to want some kind of way to optimize images for load times, either by hand, ahead of uploading, or through a server-side process like Smush, or Kraken. Liquid Web is making this a feature of their WordPress hosting plans. It’s something almost no one thinks about and people are generating larger & larger images these days, uploading them w/o thinking.

Cheers!

Pat

I’m currently using Imagify on one of my clients’ sites. However, as a designer, I’d rather work on each image individually.

For jpg’s, I use JPEG Mini and ImageOptim for png’s. But something like Imagify (or whatever) is great if you’ve got clients that are uploading their own images (and don’t want to use an image editor or image optimization software).

As you know, it’s always a tradeoff between quality vs file size.

Kind regards,

Tommy

Hi Art,

I've had pretty good luck with the EWWW Image Optimizer plugins and service.

ImageOptim, as mentioned earlier, can easily handle PNGs and JPGs.  I've been using it for some time and extremely happy with it.  I do believe it is Mac-specific though.  Additionally, if you happen to have Photoshop, they offer some new ways to easily export a group of layers or artboards to a 'generated assets' folder with compression set to your liking based on how you name the layer.  The compression is nearly as good as imageOptim's (for JPG at least).  See https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/generate-assets-layers.html for more info on that

Thanks for all the great responses!

Pat, thanks for the heads up on Liquid Web, which recently bought RackSpace's Cloud Sites business, where I currently host all of my clients. I've been thinking about migrating to one of their managed WordPress offerings.

Tommy, I'm with you in that I don't like the idea of an algorithm deciding on the best quality of some high-end photography. But, clients being what they are...I do like the idea of setting up max size parameters to prevent them from filling up the server with 300ppi full-screen images.

John, I'll look into Ewww, though it sounds very similar to WP Smush.

I'm also curious about Google's new JPEG compressor they just open sourced. Hopefully that means someone with have a WP plugin that utilizes it soon.

Cheers,
Art

Thanks Robin. Currently, everything is being sized and optimized in PS before uploading. I'm thinking more in terms of when my clients are uploading enormous files with reckless abandon. They come from print backgrounds where bigger always is better. We all know that you can tell your client exactly what to do and they'll end up doing the opposite. I'm trying to save them from themselves. 😀

Cheers,
Art
