Hi, I was looking at the docs for the etymology endpoint and had a question about the response.

For example, for the word "book", the response is:

"<?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\"?>\n<ety>[OE. <ets>book</ets>, <ets>bok</ets>, AS. <ets>bōc</ets>; akin to Goth. <ets>bōka</ets> a letter, in pl. book, writing, Icel. <ets>bōk</ets>, Sw. <ets>bok</ets>, Dan. <ets>bog</ets>, OS. <ets>bōk</ets>, D. <ets>boek</ets>, OHG. <ets>puoh</ets>, G. <ets>buch</ets>; and fr. AS. <ets>bōc</ets>, <ets>bēce</ets>, beech; because the ancient Saxons and Germans in general wrote runes on pieces of beechen board. Cf. <er>Beech</er>.]</ety>\n"

I would like to understand what the "OE.", "AS.", "Icel.", "Sw.", and etc mean.

I can reason some out myself; OE = old english, Sw = swedish, Dan = danish

But I was wondering if you could point me to some resource that has the mapping of the codes.

Thanks Kritik!

Many of the etymologies come from a dictionary based on the Webster's New International Dictionary of 1913. I have attached a PDF of abbreviations from a later version of that dictionary.

In a future version of our developer site we'll add a list of these common abbreviations -- thank you for suggesting it!

We like to send Wordnik stickers to people who send us helpful feedback; if you'd like some, just reply with your mailing address!

Yours,

Erin
