Spirit of Adonijah? (1 Kings 1: 1–27)

He had been waiting to truncate his father’s plans for the throne but could not hatch his plans while his father was still strong because he remembered what happened to Absalom his brother. So, when Adonijah saw that his father had become very old and could no more efficiently direct the affairs of the nation, he moved swiftly to execute his agenda. The Bible says that he put himself forward and said “I will be king.” And, to make that statement good, he got chariots and horses ready and fifty men to run ahead of him. He conferred with captains in the army and priests that he knew were not so close to his father but carefully left out those who were sure to tell David what was going on. He sacrificed sheep and cattle, invited the royal officials of Judah and his other brothers but deliberately left out Solomon.
God has a way of dealing with usurpers. So, when Adonijah was busy executing his plans, God used Nathan the prophet to push Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother into quick action. He reminded her of David’s promise to her to ensure that Solomon her son becomes king after him and advised her what she must do to make David fulfill the promise. It all looked like staged dramas but David moved into action, instructed his aids to make Solomon ride on his mule, anoint him and blow the trumpet and shout “Long live King Solomon!” As soon as this was done, all Israel knew that Solomon was king and the usurper was effectively defeated. Adonijah wanted to ensure that his father’s wishes did not come to pass but God had a different idea.
I have seen the spirit of Adonijah in operation in many areas of our societies. Are there not several people who have worked very hard and waited patiently for promotion in their offices but their subordinates planned with other powers in the office to unseat them and take over their positions? Or, aren’t there many organizations where people who were not so skilled were brought in from outside to occupy positions that gave them powers to unseat skilled and experienced people who may become threats to them? Often, you hear people say “If I must perform, I must be allowed to bring my own people on board.” This essentially means that they must eject people they meet in the company, irrespective of skills and years of service. In many instances, these people come with a sweep and after milking the company, they migrate to the next company to repeat the same thing. Have you been working faithfully and waiting patiently for promotion in your office? God will promote you and every Adonijah in that office will meet with Prophet Nathan in Jesus name.
In many societies, people are prepared to take other people’s lives if they see them as threats to their ambitions. Do you know what would have happened to Solomon if God had not used Nathan to ensure he became king? Adonijah would have killed him! Have we not heard of politicians killing opponents at election time in some countries? Has God promised to make you leader or ruler, manager or director, pastor or overseer? No one can truncate your destiny. Some people may be secretly planning to see that your enthronement does not see the light of the day but not to worry; a billion Adonijahs cannot stop God from fulfilling His promise. Continue doing what you are doing and keep waiting on God to take action. You do not need to maneuver or do things that will give your enemies power over you. Solomon did not say a word until God enthroned him. God has not forgotten you; your time will come soon! Have a great week and God bless you all!
