The name ‘God Almighty’ was said to have originated from the Hebrew word ‘El Shaddai,’ meaning ‘God, the All-powerful One.’ As there were many gods worshipped by the nations around Israel, such as, Baal, El Asherah and Astarte, the real God needed to be separated from the others, and what better way to do this than to call Him the All-powerful One!
Not only did the Hebrews use the name El Shaddai for God, God Himself introduced His name using the same words. In Genesis 17:1, the Bible says:
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless
Now, the very notion of ‘All,’ suggests to us that there’s nothing left. God has all power, He left none for any other thing that calls itself ‘god.’ This means, as we have often seen or noticed, that anyone who is busy worshipping or serving those other gods is wasting his or her time. Or, how else would you describe the person who puts something in his or her pocket or pause and calls it god, or who puts oil on the head of his or her god, or who cooks food and takes it to his or her god, knowing that it cannot eat it? What would you say of people who put their god in one corner of their homes, meaning that when they go out or travel, the god is left behind at home?
Elijah intentionally created the contest on Mount Carmel, between him and the prophets of Baal. Though he was visibly outnumbered by Baal’s prophets (450:1), He was certain to prove to Israel that God does not operate by numbers. After giving the opposition plenty of time for their god to disappoint them, Elijah repaired the alter of the Lord that was broken down and created an impossible scenario for fire to ever ignite, let alone consuming an offering. Yet, as soon as he finished uttering a simple prayer to God, the Bible says in 1 Kings 18:38:
Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench
What God did on this mountain left no one in doubt as to the Almightiness of God. Even the prophets of Baal all fell on their faces and shouted, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!” When the Almighty God does something, no rational human being is left in doubt. There could be no shade ambiguity surrounding the touch of His Finger.
When Gideon was going into battle with the Midianites, he had 32,000 fighters with him. God told him that the people were too many, lest, when they won, they could claim that their own strength had saved them. God needed to prove to Israel that He did not save by numbers, so He made Gideon to reduce the size of the fighters from 32,000 to 300. Gideon went into the battle with less than one percent of his original army and had a resounding victory.
There is no contesting with our God. He is all-powerful and all-mighty. The problem that we, His children have, is that we do not know Him enough, because if we do, we shall be strong, and do exploits according to Daniel 11:32. We do not serve a God who cannot see, speak, feel, act or react. We do not serve a God who does not hear the cry of His children. But we need to know Him and what He is capable of doing, in order to get things done. Here’s the question of the week: Do you know God? Please meditate on this and make changes where necessary. May the Almighty God stand by you all the days of your life, in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen. Have a blessed week!
PLEASE ACT NOW:
If you are yet to give your life to Christ, you do not have a covenant with God and His promises do not apply to you. To come under these promises, please surrender your life to Christ today, by praying this prayer:
Lord I know that I am a sinner and I am unable to save myself. I am sorry for my sins and I pray that you please forgive me. I am aware that Your Son Jesus died for my sins and I accept Him as my Lord and savior. I surrender my life unto you from this moment. Please take control of my entire being and help me to be obedient to your Word, going forward. Thank you, Lord, for hearing me. I have prayed in Jesus’ name. Amen.
If you prayed the foregoing prayer, you have just been born again. Please find a Bible believing church in your area and ask to see the pastor. Let him or her know that you have just given your life to Christ and s/he will guide you on next steps in your journey as a child of God. The Lord bless you!
