Freedom: Do You Know The Truth? (John 8:31-34)

In deliverance ministry, we are taught to ask candidates if they would want to be free. Why, someone may ask? Why would anyone come to see a doctor if he or she does not want to be made whole? Well, we will be wrong to assume that everyone who goes to the hospital wants to be well. Strange things abound in this life. We hear stories of people who are well, but do not want to leave the hospital. In Jesus’ ministry, He often asked people questions like, ‘Do you want to be made whole?’ or, ‘What would you want me to do for you?’ Sounds like asking the obvious? Wait until you see a madman (pardon my crude language) who sees a sane man and calls him mad because he (the madman) believes, in his mind, that it’s the sane guy that is mad.

The most difficult people to receive freedom are those who do not believe that they are in bondage. In John 8:31-32, the Bible says:

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

You know what they answered Him? “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” In other words, ‘What are you talking about, Jesus, we are not bound, how can those who are not incarcerated need to be rescued?’

In life, we see that it is easy to preach freedom to someone who is in jail, or someone who is enslaved or a borrower who is sinking under the weight of heavy debts. But, when it comes to preaching freedom to those who are under the bondage of sin, they look at themselves and say, ‘I am well-to-do, no one is feeding me or paying my bills for me, I have made it in life, I can afford to do all that I choose to do, and why would anyone even think that I need freedom?’

People are deceived, not only by other people, but also by their own situations and circumstances. Those who are worldly do not know that a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of what he possesses (Luke 12:15). What is this life even worth without Christ? In Mark 8:36, the Bible says:

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

In recent times, we’ve seen prominent people in society, who were sued or jailed because they misunderstood freedom. They used their positions to lure minors into sexual slavery and to lure people into other forms of servitude. Thinking that they were above the law owing to their financial or political powers, they lived the ‘Catch me if you can’ lifestyle. They became predators and acted as though no one could challenge them. In the end, these people were shocked to find themselves in jail; some committed suicide as they could not bear the shame.

Freedom is not just the absence of physical restrictions, in fact, one could be physically restricted, but free, while, on the other hand, one may run freely, but be bound. The Jews hid under the premise that they were Abraham’s descendants and thought they were free. They were surprised when Jesus told them they needed to know the Truth in order to be truly free. They needed to know Jesus, for He, alone, could provide true freedom.

Here comes the pertinent question: you may be roaming freely, enjoying your life and having no apparent problems, thank God for that, but do you know the Truth? God forbid, but should anything happen to you today (just as no one knows the next minute), do you know where you will spend eternity? Please do not assume for a minute that there is no life beyond this earth, for in Revelation 20:12-15, the Bible says

And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

You may be free from other things but are you free from sin? Have you surrendered your life to Jesus? Have you asked Him to wash you clean with the Blood which He shed on the cross for this purpose? If your answer to these questions is no, or, at least, you don’t know, then I implore you to please give your life to Christ without further delays. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life; no one comes to God except through Him (John 14:6). Please accept the real Truth. This is where freedom lies. This is where eternal life with God lies. I pray that nothing stops you from taking this step now, in Jesus’ name. Amen. Please stay safe and have a blessed week!

PLEASE ACT NOW:

If you are yet to give your life to Christ, you do not have a covenant with God and His promises do not apply to you. To come under these promises, please surrender your life to Christ today, by praying this prayer:

Lord I know that I am a sinner and I am unable to save myself. I am sorry for my sins and I pray that you please forgive me. I am aware that Your Son Jesus died for my sins and I accept Him as my Lord and savior. I surrender my life unto you from this moment. Please take control of my entire being and help me to be obedient to your Word, going forward. Thank you, Lord, for hearing me. I have prayed in Jesus’ name. Amen.

If you prayed the foregoing prayer, you have just been born again. Please find a Bible believing church in your area and ask to see the pastor. Let him or her know that you have just given your life to Christ and s/he will guide you on next steps in your journey as a child of God. The Lord bless you!
