Good work everyone.

Just to double check the date for wordcampnz was announced as being 26th & 27th so that has already changed by 1 week.?

Im expecting to be at both & want to get the right flights. :)

I assume that webstock has been contacted. I have had informal chats with a Foocamp organiser.

Btw Im still not keen on sponsor & venue discussions being conducted in public.

I also wonder if being associated too closely with Linux Australia will put off some of the non- geeks & limit sponsor choices.

A certain large non linux sponsor at wordcamp SF should be cool with it but without mentioning that name - is there going to be flexibility going forward for other sponsors?

    G'Day Everyone,

Just wanted to chime in and let you know about what's going on with WordCamp Australia. I've had a further chat with John Ferlito from Linux Australia about becoming a subcommittee of Linux Australia in order to hold an annual WordCamp in 2011. The main reason for this is to remove the technicalities behind starting our own association and simplifying the camp financials, insurance, etc. We will be an official "linux australia" event with this arrangement.

Based on John's recommendations, we needed a four person subcommittee to liase with Linux Australia. I have nominated myself, Sarah Stokely, James Collins, and Brent Shepherd as committee members - to which they have all agreed. We will be responsible for liaising between WordCamp volunteers and Linux Australia, and keeping Linux Australia informed as to our undertakings leading up to the camp.

Sarah is going to be representing the interests of the content crowd and helping develop the schedule. Brent is going to be representing the interests of those outside of Melbourne as he's based in Brisbane. I'm going to be leading the organisation of WordCamp and making sure everything that needs to happen happens. I'll probably help out with the technical content of the camp with James as well. James is going to be an all around go-to guy and our "accountant". James, Sarah, and I are based in Melbourne, so we're going to be handling most of the on the ground work as well.

We have also made an executive decision to call the 'camp "WordCamp Down Under" to associate the conference with the collective effort of the Australian WordPress Community in a manner that suits all of the parties involved.

Please let everyone know if anyone has any objections to what I've laid out, and we can debate it out like Tony and Julia ;).

Assuming there aren't any objections, I'm going to write up an email to the Linux Australia list and pass it by everyone and then send an email off to Linux Australia regarding our registration as a subcommittee.

In regards to the Linux Australia subcommittee membership, our goals are as follows.
    - 1. Make the 'camp incredibly awesome.
    - 2. Generate a profit in future conferences, of which will be used to support other WordPress related projects as to be determined by another committee which will be set up at a later day.

    Cheers,
    Anthony

    Anthony and the new subcommittee,

You have my full support, thank you for taking the hard areas out of the
    equation with the help
of Linux Australia (Thanks Linux Australia also)

Should really help focus on the content of the event more now than ever,
    brilliant move.
I love 'WordCamp Down Under' too.

    Kind regards

    That's brilliant work Anthony.

No doubt there have been extensive discussions among the committee about this, but will there be any ramifications from using the "WordCamp" prefix from the Automattic people? Wouldn't want a shitstorm like the one around Thesis.

Is feb still the go-to date on this?

Ignore the Automattic people, focus on the WordPress Foundation mob, they're the ones who handle the trademark, I know thats nit-picking, but i'm just trying to separate Automattic/WordPress in peoples minds.

Now, for the use of the Trademark, As long as it follows the guidelines posted AND someone contacts the foundation to get permission to use the trademark, then its A-OK, Dont follow the rules / ignore the trademark, you wont be in the good books of some. I know the personal feelings of certain people within the Australian community is 'fuck the guidelines, we should do it how we want', but I'd like to see everything done by the book there.

The current rules are published here: http://central.wordcamp.org/about/ they're rather slim on details, but its a start.

So, IIRC, Using 'WordCamp <country>' is out, Its not a local event.
'WordCamp <city|state|other "local" name>' is fine.
Using 'WordCamp <alternative name for country>' is skating on the edge, and is highly unlikely to receive trademark-use permission IMO.

If trademark-use isn't granted, I would be highly surprised if Linux Australia would support the event myself.. I dont feel it would be in line with Linux Australia's policies.

All of this is my opinion, None of it is official, And the final answer will come from the WordPress Foundation.
(Please do not contact me off-list to discuss my opinions of the above, Its opinion, just that, I'm not going to explain myself, nor am I going to listen to your arguments for it, I've heard them many times, and with talking to those who manage the Trademark future use, I fully agree that they're working in the best interests of the Trademark. While the rules may not suit ANZ perfectly, its a world-wide issue.)

    > Is feb still the go-to date on this?

Still aiming for a NZ/AU dual camp IIRC, here's the last proposed dates:

    Sat 12th - 13th >> FooCamp Auckland
    Mon 14th - 18th >> WebStock Week
    Sat 19th - 20th >> Wellington WordCamp
    Sat 26th - 27th >> Melbourne WordCamp

Hi Guys,

The 2011 WordCamp dates are as follows;

Wellington - 29th & 20th Feb
Melbourne - 26th & 27th Feb

The previous weeks are impossible because of various annual events in both NZ and Ausie (webstock & foocamp). Anthony and I worked out that any other combination is pretty much impossible.

Best,
Dan

Opps. I typed that wrong. Damnit.

Wellington - is the 19th & 20th Feb

I've got lots of potential international speakers interested in coming over too.

Best,
Dan

Why not call it WordCampANZ

it won't mean anything outside the local area but still nice and short & more meaningful

Hey Guys,

So the conversation with Te Papa (the Museum of NZ) has started again. I'm looking at the Soundings Theatre (floor plan attached) for the Saturday, it sits 328 people, and the Oceania room for the Sunday.

- http://tepapa.govt.nz/ConferencesAndFunctions/VenueHire/Pages/Oceania.aspx

Hopefully our sponsors this year will be able to cough up some decent funds. On that note Instinct is definitely going to cough up some cash to help out. For the Saturday I'm gunning for big name speakers. Hopefully Matt Mullenweg will be coming and will be the Key Note speaker. We'll see... on that note though I'm lobbying lots of people that I've met while travelling to different WordCamps overseas.

Also Jane hasn't yet responded to an email I sent her regarding WordCamp Down Under. I'll give her a little bit more time before I start pestering her.

Best,
Dan

Hi everyone,
It's great that we're keeping the Au and NZ folks up to date with what's happening with our respective WordCamps and ensuring that the timings work out so people can attend both. And obviously this will also help us to try to get great speakers to attend both as well. But I must ask that if you're not one of the Au organisers, please don't do things on our behalf. Anthony already started discussion with Automattic some time ago about what name we're allowed to use for the Melb WordCamp and in the interests of keeping things simple and clear, please leave us to continue that conversation with Jane/whoever else at Automattic she may want us to deal with. We decided to try for "WordCamp Down Under" to try to avoid further difficulty, not to prolong it.
I personally don't give two hoots whether it's WordCamp Australia, WordCamp DownUnder, or if we end up being forced to call it WordCamp Melbourne (although I think our argument that everyone in Australia would like a national WordCamp holds some weight). But what I don't want is more people jumping into the negotiations with Automattic and making it more difficult for us to get a resolution on the issue.
Dan - if you'd like to chat about doing some kind of Au/NZ submission to Automattic on this, I'm open to the idea. I'm not 100% sold on the idea that WordCamp Down Under would be a good banner for an Au/NZ WordCamp tour, if that's even what we're talking about here (since Down Under is pretty strongly associated with Australia, not NZ) . But the bottom line is, I don't think we should have two different people from two different WordCamps both negotiating with Jane about it.

Cheers,
Sarah

FYI - as I'm not a member of the wordcamp NZ group, it wouldn't let me post this message to that group.

Good call. It came about because Anthony asked me to see whether or not I could possibly get anything out of Jane - I drafted up an email, I then showed it to Anthony and he thought it was ok to send. That email is attached for your perusal. In hindsight I definitely should have posted it to both lists for discussion - which was the whole reason for me fighting so hard to get the two lists setup in the first place. So my bad!!

I think the whole point of this, and thus my participation, has been to do a Dual WordCamp event because we are both 99% more likely to get international speakers. Especially if its done in the Summer time. It is what I've been pushing for since day 1.

It would definitely be my preference to do a joint submission and to the above effect - I would be keen to work with you on this if you're keen.

Ciao,
Dan

Hi Dan,
Apologies, I didn't know that you'd worked with Anthony on that email to Jane - sounds like you did the right thing. :)
I'll have a chat with Anthony & the guys here about next steps. Thanks for clearing that up!

Cheers,
Sarah

Apparently Jane doesn't see this as a priority. She doesn't care about this conference or just doesn't understand what "replying in a decent time frame" means.

I wish she would understand that getting things done and getting people to sponsor things in December and January here is absolute nightmare, and in addition to that, a grasp the fact that we're not America would be nice (and I'm not trying to insult anyone here, I'm American myself).

Sorry, but I had to say it. I've held my tongue far too long, but this is bullshit.
