Hey All,

I've been having a bit of thoughts about sustainability and the conference we're planning. What do you think about sustainability? I think it would be really awesome to continue the tradition that we had at the last time (minus the miso soup incident with the spoons... fun times) and really get the event as green and sustainable as possible. I'm a really big fan of sustainability and I think we can carry it a long way with the conference.

Cheers,
Anthony

Too weird for me. Everybody probably has a different idea of what that is so it could potentially be a big side track. No panda patties on the BBQ is sustainability in my books :)

I'll hold it in mind but I'd not make it a driving force. And no speakers on wind farms.

Back to sleep now...

Sustainability isn't "weird" and makes perfect sense. All it requires is thinking out of the box when you need to work out supplies or other logistical issues. Every little bit helps.

Glad Anthony put it on the table and hope it stays in the frame while the planning stage continues (he said, while unsustainably mixing his metaphors).

Ok sustainability isn't weird but I just don't think we can afford (financially speaking) to say buy organic meat if we want to let students in for free and not charge much. You can't have your organic pie 'and' eat it ;)

Sustainability is cool and as long as it doesn't make every decision a convoluted one then I'm cool.

I'm a big fan and supporter of sustainability and am happy to help out where I can.

We might be able to get http://www.keepcup.com involved as they are based in Melbourne. They did a branded set of keepcups for our twitter group recently with only a 50 unit order (normally 500 I think)
A Wordcamp Melbourne 2011 keepcup is worth considering maybe as a bonus for the first x number of pre-ordered tickets or an option when ordering tickets.

For anyone not aware of what a keepcup is it's an eco friendly cup designed to replace the takeaway coffe/tea/hotchocolate cups so you don't have to keep throwing away papercups every time you go to your local cafe for take-aways.

A keepcup sounds cool. Do you think we could get them to brand them with the "W"... that would be way cool!

Seaking of coffee I think that we should ask Jason Kemp (NZ) about getting Surpreme to sponsor coffee at the event like they did at the last Wellington WordCamp. That was amazing.

Fantastic idea. +1
I hate all the plastic "one use only" crap that you get at most conferences. w
I loved the cardboard lanyard/nametag we got at the Sydney wordcamp - hopefully we can have something like that again too. This time with a spot to write your Twitter handle on it as well. :)

That was great... It's a bit tougher in Melbourne, because you can't really
get good coffee there.

Hi Jeff,

as a Sydney person defending Melbourne's coffee scene (go figure?) I think they have great coffee but you have to know where to find it.
This app which I wish Sydney had too has some pretty impressive options for someone with your obviosly high standards looking for the
perfect brew in Melbourne.

Sorry for the slight deviation from topic but coffee and Wordpress are related aren't they?

I asked about putting wordcamp.org.au on the wordcamp.org infrastructure and
canberra.wordcamp.org (with .au if that ends up being possible)... but Jane
has been travelling. Then the weekend hit. So, I figure we'll hear something
tomorrow perhaps.

Plus wordcamp.org is getting some upgrade/infra love so setting up new sites
is paused for the moment.

I will have to bug her about Canberra this week, so I'll ask about the other
bits too.

How is everybody going?

So what venues have we decided are coolest from 1 - 10. I'll call them today if need be...

I've been looking at using Wellington Highschool for the NZ Feb WordCamp or possibly even Te Papa our museum.

Hey Dan,

I can hear the crickets, can you? Everyone must be busy busy. :)

The State Library of Victoria & RMIT were the top picks for venue. Last thing I heard was about a month ago from Anthony:

I'm going to call the State Library of Victoria and RMIT to try and clarify their availability and operating cost.
Another possibility for a venue I've just lurched on is http://www.zoosvictoriafunctions.com.au/.

Anthony, any updates? No problems if other commitments are consuming your time, just let us know where you're at and Dan or I can take it from there.

What do you guys think. I'm thinking two tracks;
1) dev / advanced
2) content / WP noob

I also think we should be aiming to get Matt M as key note for both WGTN & Melbourne.

In terms of people on this list who would be interested in being a speaker. Throwing caution to the wind I'll be straight up about wanting to see Jdub & Sara talking about their respective specialities...

I'd be happy to talk about how we use WP and custom post types for storing game / level data in gamemakers.co.nz??

What do you guys want to hear?

Real world examples of how features are being used by developers, with a quick walk through of how they've implemented it would get a huge +1 from me on behalf of newer developers who might attend.

I'm amused by the correlation between content and newbiness, Dan. :)
I'm keen to put together a content track and have lots of ideas for that. I can also put some items on the wishlist for more newbie dev/tweaking stuff ie how to get started on editing themes, that kind of thing.

Very keen for two tracks. :)

Dan, any insider means for getting early commitment from Matt M? I've been told he won't commit more than a few months in advance. We do have a good bargaining chip getting him to the Southern Hemisphere with the two camps & webstock within the 9 days.

I'm really not sure. I'll ask Jane next time I see her on Skype :)

I think more of a bargaining chip is that there will be two kick ass wordcamps on our side of the world... we need to show off what we're made off.

Does anybody have a speaker wishlist?
What about Collis from Envato?

Is anyone else gritting their teeth every time someone is vetoed for being non GPL? It feels like a bunch of locals are being excluded so we can use the WordCamp name and have a shot at getting Matt to come speak. :( It's a shame the community is getting fractured by this. :(

Hey Everybody,

Lets get a potential sponsor list happening here too.

It just occured to me that dual sponsorship might appeal to people. So while Collis / Envato might not be able to speak they might want to pay a premium to been seen as promoting both the WGTN & Melbourne WordCamps...

Just a thought. I can call the venues today - I'll start posting information on the list as soon as I get it...

I'm getting clarification on this. Because I agree its mental.

Either way I think we should have this conversation with Matt in person because I don't think the people who are conveying this information are doing a good job and its confusing. Everybody in the world is wondering about this.

Maybe we should do a panel discussion on it and put them in the hot seat?

There is a right way to make this work for us and everything is kinda weird at the moment. I don't like some of the vibes either but I don't think us ranting about it here (anthony i know you're dying to have a say ;)) is the right place.... there must be a good strategy eh?

Having GPL issues fracture our already smallish WP community is a real shame. I guess we'll wait for clarification on the official word.

Personally, I think we are better able to help others understand "why GPL" by including them. That said, every battle over GPL (Thesis/IncSub) has resulted in a conversion, so perhaps the stick does work better than the carrot?

Now to avoid hijacking the original thread, GPL could be a great topic. At least if it's kept practical.

I think a common contention with GPL is the belief that it prevents making money. Perhaps derived from a belief that selling code is the only business model for software or for that matter the misconception that GPL prevents selling code. So I'd love to hear a talk from anyone making a living/business off their code (theme or plugin) in some interesting manner, while releasing it GPL.

Dan Milward

unread,

Yes. I can tell you straight away that GPL does not stop you from making money - if it did then Automttic would not be here... SilverStripe (the business) would not be here... Red Hat Linux probably wouldnt be here. I wouldnt be here. Oh man the list goes on.

People are scared to go GPL because they worry it will cannibalize their income. That was our greatest fear before going GPL with our Gold Plugins.

I totally think we should have a somebody personable like Jeff talk about GPL. And I think that somebody like Matt and Sara and somebody else should do a panel on the WordCamp stuff...

Recently I remember hearing about somebody that did a GPL presentation in a story format. I can't remember the details. But it was about making it interesting and educative in one... personally I find reading legal docs terribly boring. Heck I think its why the creative commons are so cool - lets strip away all the gobbeldy gook and point out the bits that matter to the average punter.

I'd be happy to collaborate on something like this. Maybe we could come up with some icons like CC have?
