I'm not sure what to say at this juncture.  While I agree that a "plan for more plans" is insufficient, I concede that the City of Worcester and its various departments are doing something proactive and a lot better than what they've been doing over the last five years.  Of course, you would have to have been in the room for those five years, as I was, having the difficult conversation, which I have endeavored to write up, so as to be useful.  More raucus public hearings is not the answer.

Dear friend,

After months of organizing around the Green Worcester Plan, Sunrise members and concerned citizens spoke up at the Green Worcester Plan Public Hearing last Wednesday. We learned a couple of things:

-The plan is not guided by science. The plan makes no reference to leading scientific studies and its targets aren't aligned with the best available science on what we need to do to avoid climate collapse. This is unacceptable.
-The plan is a plan for more plans. Attendees were repeatedly told the Green Worcester Plan is a "menu" and does not contain any "recipes or ingredients." Meaning, any specifics, details, or concrete policies will be addressed in the future. This seems like further delay on climate action. Because of that, many of the public's very concrete and constructive questions went unanswered.
-Rather than show a real curiosity, concern, or interest in the climate crisis, City Council Committee members were more interested in the cost of the plan. Frankly, we don't have many climate champions or people who know about climate change on the City Council. This needs to change.

There's more we could say. But this will not cut it. Local, state, and federal governments are taking away our chance for a livable future under the ruse of being "pragmatic" and "realistic." How realistic is it to live on a planet that warms over 6 degrees? How much will that cost? These questions are never asked because our politicians aren't interested in the answers. With new studies showing global Nation's emissions reductions are only expected to decrease 2% by 2030 (we need 45%), it's time to up the pressure and find new tactics for action. Our future depends on it.

WEEK AHEAD:
🐴Communications Team Meeting: Monday March 1st 6 PM
Come help us with graphics, social media, and making our message to the public! Much of this communications meeting will be spent on planning for the Global Climate Rally on March 19th.

💊Political Team Meeting: Wednesday March 3rd 7 PM
With a lack of care or concern from so much of our City Council about the climate crisis, we need new people in office. This political team meeting will focus on endorsements and our strategy for electing new people to office in Worcester.

🌎Climate Rally Team Meeting: Thursday March 4th 6 PM
March 19th is a global day of climate strikes and rallies. We're bringing one to Worcester. Come join us for our second strike meeting as we plan, plot, and strategize to bring attention to the climate crisis here and elsewhere.

🏖Training Team Meeting: Monday March 8th 5 PM
Join our Training Team as we plan trainings to educate and activate our members and community to develop skills, knowledge, and strategy. We're in the process of a Climate 101 training and would love some help!
