June 2022 - vol. 91
#NHV
Welcome to the June edition of the info new haven e-newsletter. June has arrived, ushering in National Pride Month 🏳️‍🌈, a class of new grads, and celebration of dads. This month, downtown will come to life with delicious grubs, art, music, and dance, the warm weather inviting locals across Elm City to hit the streets. Whether you’re looking for the perfect gift for Father’s Day, or on the hunt for a new garden bar to become a regular at, keep scrolling to find out why Downtown New Haven has it all!

In the Spotlight

As the "Cultural Capital of Connecticut", New Haven is home to a great many seasonal festivals celebrating art, culture, and food. The International Festival of Arts & Ideas (IFAI) is one of those, spotlighting world-class artists, thinkers, and leaders. Their vision? To foster arts and ideas in the lives of New Haven locals. IFAI is downtown’s longest-running celebration of dance, music, theater, and more. This year’s must-see IFAI performances include Octavia E. Butler's Parable of the Sower: An Opera by Toshi Reagon and Bernice Johnson Reagon, Dallas Black Dance Theatre and Michelle Buteau, purchase tickets here. See the entire IFAI festival lineup here.

Eat

With the summer sun on display, June is the perfect time for outdoor dining downtown. From rooftop bars to private patios, to outdoor terraces and sidewalk cafes, al fresco dining is where it's at this month. Check out downtown’s evolving skyline from the rooftop at High George at The Blake Hotel, or sip on happy hour specials in the private patio at 116 Crown.

As for the grads in your life, you can find everything from brand new electronics to vintage books to help kick off their promising new phase of life. Here’s a curated list of shops guaranteed to wow and amaze:

Explore

With warmer weather making a gradual return, it’s time to get out and explore the hidden gems around the Elm City.  Here’s what we recommend doing this month, loved by locals and visitors alike, make your way up to East Rock Park for sweeping views of downtown and Long Island Sound. While there, head to the Soldiers & Sailors Monument, a war memorial located on the 366-foot summit of East Rock. To end your adventure, check out the Giant Steps Trail which provides a spectacular 285-foot climb with more sweeping views.

Experience

‘Tis the season for a scoop (or two) of the best ice cream in the state! This month marks #NationalIceCreamDay on June 7th, and what better way to celebrate than visiting a downtown ice cream shop? Made locally and scooped into a cup or cone to perfection, our go-to spots include Arethusa, Ashley’s or Milk Craft.

Ice cream and martinis? Yes, please. This month also marks #NationalMartiniDay on June 19th. Celebrate dad with a classic, shaken, not stirred. Let downtown’s seasoned mixologists serve you their interpretation of this staple. We recommend stopping by Bar 19, Elm City Social or Ordinary.
