Greetings Neighbors!

Here are a few community updates as we move towards the week-end.

Public Safety
  • Wooster Square Crime. Per the bi-weekly Compstat Meeting this morning, there has been a spike in motor vehicle thefts throughout the City, with 5 in Wooster Square between July 31-August 10, 2023. Vehicles were stolen on 7/24 at 83 Water Street at 11:30am; 7/27 at 175 Chestnut Street at 8:28am; 7/28 at 17 Brown Street at 1:54pm; on 7/29 at 21 Wooster Place at 6:37am; and on 8/4 at 548 Chapel Street at 11:40am. The majority of vehicles have been Hyundais, Kias and Hondas. The NHPD is exploring strategies for increasing officer presence in areas where these thefts are happening.
  • Compstat Meetings. Come September, bi-weekly Compstat Meetings will be held alternately via zoom and in person at 11:30am. I will share more information about dates when I know them. Please let me know if you have an interest in learning more about Compstat Meetings, the work of the Wooster Square Watch and/or the Citizen's Academy described below. I have learned so much about the benefits of effective community policing and the importance of collaboration with the NHPD during the past 6 years that I've been leading the Wooster Square Watch. I'm eager to connect with those who are interested in learning more. You can find me at  wooster...@gmail.com.
NHPD Launches Citizen's Academy - Wednesday Evenings, September 6-October 4, 2023 - 6-9pm
The New Haven Police Department is excited to announce the launch of its Citizens Academy program, a five-week course designed to foster communication, collaboration, respect, and understanding between the police department and New Haven residents. The program will cover a diverse range of topics, such as community policing, de-escalation techniques, court system, and more, to provide participants with an in-depth insight into the workings of the department.

Please note, the Citizens Academy is not the Police Academy, and graduates will not receive police officer certification. The program is open to New Haven residents over 21 years of age. Applicants with no outstanding arrest warrants, no felony convictions, and no convictions involving domestic violence or weapon use are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be willing to submit to a background check.

The course will take place on Wednesday evenings from 6 PM to 9 PM, starting September 6th and ending on October 4th, 2023. Applicants must attend all sessions to graduate. The program will be held at the New Haven Police Training Center, 200 Wintergreen Ave., New Haven, CT, 06513. Lieutenant Jason Rentkowicz will receive applications via email at jrent...@newhavenct.gov or through mailing at the New Haven Police Academy, 710 Sherman Pkwy., New Haven, CT 06511. The New Haven Police Department looks forward to welcoming enthusiastic applicants for the Citizens Academy program, taking a significant step towards building a stronger connection between police and community.

NHPD Civilian Complaints Office
NHPD alternate location for Civilian Complaints is now located at City Hall on the first floor.
Please note this is by appointment only. To request an appointment please contact 203-946-6249.
*Walk ins are welcomed if the Internal Affairs Staff is present*  The city website is updated to reflect this information.

Puerto Rican Festival: Saturday, August 12 from 1 to 9 pm New Haven Green
This year's New Haven Puerto Rican Festival is this Saturday from 1-9 PM on the Green. This regional celebration of Puerto Rican culture features food trucks, family activities, arts & crafts, and live music.

Affordable Housing List
To help residents find affordable housing options, the city's Livable City Initiative has created a Below Market Rate Registry, which is a list of affordable housing options in New Haven that are restricted to renters with incomes below 80% of the Area Median Income (or less). 80% of AMI in New Haven is around $55,000. You can use this website and map to find affordable apartment options and reach out to landlords about available units.

Enjoy the week-end everyone! 🌞

Hello Neighbors,

As a reminder, we will not be holding a meeting this month.  We are hoping to see you all in-person next month (details to be firmed up and sent out within a few weeks).

Just a couple of quick notes:

The State of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection will host a stakeholder engagement session on August 16, 2023 at 10:30 AM to present and get your feedback on the revised Sustainable, Transparent, and Efficient Practices for Solar Siting Draft Guidance for Siting Solar on Agricultural Lands and the possibility of a bid preference for Agrivoltaics in the next SCEF procurement.

Click HERE to register for this virtual public meeting.

Attached to this email is a map sent to us by Lieutenant Borer.  This map "shows which areas are susceptible to flooding in heavy rains."  We've certainly been dealing with that recently.

We Want You

Please share this email, and the zoom link with friends and neighbors and remind them that we meet the third Tuesday of each month.

You can also share this sign up link for our email list

We look forward to seeing you next month!
