Greetings Neighbors -

Some updates for the lovely spring evening...

Public Safety
There were two public safety incidents in Wooster Square over the past couple of weeks - a vehicle theft on May 4 at 3pm at 204 Wooster Street, and intimidation with a weapon on May 12 at 11:55am at 206 Wooster Street. Since Compstat Meetings have not resumed yet, I don't have any further trend details on these incidents on Wooster Street.

Coyote Sightings in Wooster Square
Neighbors have reported seeing coyotes in our neighborhood - in Wooster Square Park as well as in the Wooster Street area! A generous neighbor shared this link with tips on what to do about coyotes. Be careful out there!
Budget Update (borrowed from Ward 7's Alder Sabin)
The final Finance Committee meeting of this year's budget process was this past Thursday, May 16th at 6 pm at City Hall. At the meeting, the committee deliberated on the mayor's proposed budget and proposed amendments reflecting the changes the committee has drafted to the mayor's budget. Under the amendments, which you can read more about in the Independent here, the budget will include:
  • A 3.49 percent mill rate increase, slightly less than the 3.98 percent increase proposed by the mayor. This means the mill rate would increase from 37.2 to 38.5 rather than to 38.68.
  • The Parks Department will again become a separate department, splitting off from the Department of Public Works as proposed by the mayor
  • The Livable City Initiative's housing development work will be shifted to the Economic Development Administration so that LCI can focus on housing code violations and enforcement
  • 12 positions proposed by the mayor were cut from the budget, including:
    • Three for the Transportation, Traffic, and Parking Department (a traffic safety enforcement officer, a manager of systems and operations, and a vision zero program coordinator)
    • Three fire captains and a fire lieutenant
  • Other new positions proposed by the mayor were approved, including six new Parks Department employees, six new public safety employees, a labor relations staff attorney, five new LCI inspectors, and part-time building inspectors
There will be a vote at the Board of Alders Special Budget meeting on Tuesday, May 28th.

Have a great Memorial Day week-end - and note that trash pickups will be delayed by one day next week.
