Blizzard Cleanup Update:
Important Information & Next Steps
In less than 24 hours, New Haven was blanketed with over 16 inches of snow. From the height of the storm through recovery efforts now underway, City of New Haven crews have worked around the clock to clear streets, open critical corridors, and protect public safety.
As the work continues, we urge residents to abide by the parking ban to allow crews to continue clearing snow. The Economic Development Administration extends its sincere gratitude for their tireless work to help our city reopen safely and efficiently.
Citywide Parking Ban Remains in Effect
As a reminder, a citywide parking ban will remain in effect until further notice. To help ensure that our snowplows can quickly and efficiently clear city streets, residents are urged to abide by the parking ban. This is vital for public safety. Crews first clear routes to hospitals and ensure emergency access across the city. Once those are open, they focus on thorough snow removal on neighborhood and secondary streets. Please see the end of this email for a list of available parking garages available for free or discounted rates during the parking ban.
The parking ban mandates:
- No parking on both sides of the street on all posted snow emergency routes and in the downtown area.
- No parking within 25 feet of a fire hydrant, intersection, or bus stop.
- In residential areas, there is no parking on the odd-numbered side of the streets.
Action Required: Clear Sidewalks, Hydrants & Corners
Residents and businesses are required to remove snow and ice from:
- Sidewalks: Clear a path at least 3 feet wide to ensure safe access for people using wheelchairs, strollers, and other mobility devices.
- Fire hydrants: If a hydrant is in front of your home or business, clear it so the Fire Department can reach it quickly in an emergency.
- Street corners: Shovel corners that abut your property, including curb ramps that connect sidewalks to the street, to keep crossings safe and accessible for all.
New Haven Public Schools
New Haven Public Schools will remain closed on Tuesday, February 24.
Trash Pick-up
Garbage collection will be delayed by one day, For example, if your regular garbage collection day is on Monday, it will be picked up on Tuesday, as public works crews will be busy clearing snow.

For individuals who might need a warm and safe place to stay, a list of warming centers and shelters can be found on the city's website or by calling 2-1-1.
