Greetings Neighbors:

It’s the first week of the month and that means Street Cleaning on the first Thursday and Friday (TODAY - June 5 and 6 this month).

Please watch for street signs indicating where no parking is required today and tomorrow. And please remember to move your cars so our streets can be effectively cleaned!

Also please see below for summer safety tips from the New Haven Department of Health. Always something new to learn!

Enjoy these warm days before the rain comes again!

Summer Safety Tips

As you and your family enjoys the warm weather, here are a few essential tips to help everyone stay safe and healthy this summer.

Protection from insects and plants

Watch out for ticks. Ticks are most active from April to September. When hiking or spending time in grassy areas, stay in the center of trails and avoid tall grass. Dress in long pants and sleeves, and tuck your pants into your socks to prevent ticks from crawling under clothing. Always check your skin and clothing for ticks before going back indoors. If possible, shower after being outdoors to help rinse off any crawling ticks.

Prevent bug bites. Apply repellent after sunscreen, and always follow the label directions. Wash off repellent and sunscreen once you are back inside.

Leaves of three, let it be. Teach kids to avoid poisonous plants, which typically have three leaves, to avoid skin irritation.

Sun Safety

  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (will be listed on the bottle) with at least 30 SPF on all exposed skin. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
  • Wear sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats, for added sun protection.

Staying Cool and Hydrated

  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose fitting clothes.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and cold beverages.
  • Stay cool by visiting a nearby library, shopping mall, movie theater, city cooling center, or other public spaces!

What's Coming Up This Month?

Men’s Health Month/ Week June 9-15

Men's Health Month raises awareness about preventable health issues and promotes early detection and treatment for men and boys. Men's Health Week encourages institutions to develop health policies and services that address the unique needs of men, boys, and their family.

This years theme is closing the empathy gap in men's health through advocacy, awareness, and action. The empathy gap refers to the lack of attention, support, and resources for men's health and well-being. As a result:

  • Prostate and testicular cancers get less attention and funding.
  • Men die six years earlier than woman, often from preventable causes.
  • Suicide rates are much higher for men.

Closing this gap means improving education around men's health, encouraging regular check ups, and increasing funding for male-specific health issues.

National HIV Testing Day - June 27

National HIV Testing Day is a reminder to know your status. Getting tested is the first step toward protecting your health and the health of others. HIV testing gets you the right care, no matter the result.

If your test is negative, you can access prevention options like PrEP, condoms, and regular STI screenings.

If your test is positive, early diagnosis provides access to treatment and reduces the risk of transmission to others.

Stop by our Health and Wellness Center for HIV testing, free condoms, or

STI testing & treatment.

Bilingual Stay & Play

In May, our Community Health Workers, Erika and Stephanie participated in the bilingual stay & play event at the Fair Haven Library. The event held interactive games, songs, and read-alouds that support early learning and language development in English and Spanish. The theme was the human body and ways stay healthy. While children explored the topic through play, our staff connected with parents, and shared public health resources and tips for healthy growing children.
