to Woomera on the Web
My brother Peter 5yrs and I (8yrs old) moved to Woomera with our mum
Violet Buckskin and German step father Martin Zweckl in 1963, I
remember travelling with Martin to Mambray Creek where he was helping
do a building favour for his Woomera boss!!
Mum worked in the Hospital Laundry but previously in 1955 worked as
one of a few Aboriginal domestic servant within Woomera. There were a
few other young Aboriginal children going to Woomera Area School from
the Milera's, Coleman, Wombat, Wanganeen families.
I remember my18 to 20yr older uncles playing football for the
Koolymilka football Club, Lionel Buckskin, Tony Betts (uncle to Eddie
Betts Carlton) Winston Carbine and Allan Wombat jnr.
I've read the many stories of Woomera with a smile and heartfelt
thanks of having my memories kick started by the memories of others. I
played soccer for the Rangers and the coaches name was Vince - I think
l got this right? As young as I was I remember Neil Kerley giving a
presentation speech at one of the football clubs and he couldn't stop
laughing for quiet a while before pronouncing a footy sponsors name
which was "Nibble Nobby's Nuts" As children the "DONGA"was and still
is the best playground in the world as we would walk for miles under
the hot desert sun. I remember one of my first movies at the Woomera
picture theatre it was "Tom Thumb" and yes two bob was a lot of money
in those days - pay your admission buy a drink and an icecream. If
anyone has any school photos to share l would dearly appreciate a copy
of them. In closing I realise I've talked about issues in my life
going back almost 48 years ago what a wonderful feeling to do so.
Cheers JohnB
