It was built in 1926 for Sultan Iskandar Shah by the Malay carpenter Enci Sepian from Bukit
Mertajam, with the assistance of his sons Zainal Abidin and Ismail. The palace was previously
known as the Valley Palace due to its location. The palace had been the official residence
between 1931 and 1933.

I've been trying hard to locate the family of The Last Raja Bendahara of Perak,
Raja Abdul Rashid ibni Sultan Idris I.
 
Read here,
 
"Raja Bendahara Abdul Rashid mangkat in 1958. He had issue, which included Raja Datin
Mariam (the wife of Raja Dato Amir Raja Razman), Raja Shoran Shah, Raja Dr Ahmad
Tajuddin Shah (Head of Department of Agricultural Technology at UPM) and Raja
Ahmad Baharuddin Shah (whose son is Raja Datuk Kamarul Bahrin Shah of SeniBahri
Arkitek, whose designs include the Masjid Tengku Tengah Zaharah near Kuala Trengganu)."

My contact in Kuala Kangsar, Raja Ahmad Sharidan C63 @ Dan, my senior of 6 years,
told me to look for the wife of the late Dr. Raja Ahmad Tajudin Shah Raja Abd Rashid C66
@ YM Ku Matta (to the Royalties) or RATS (to the MCKK boys and the UPM fraternity). http://www.agri.upm.edu.my/cv/rats.htm 
He told me that she is also a Raja from Kuala Kangsar, Perak.
And, is still attached to UPM, and Dan too may come back to me
 
Previously when we were at MCKK ground, Dan told me to get hold of the family of Raja
Teh Hasnah. They live in that small housing estate between MCKK ground and that building.
 
My another source (a member of MCKK Board of Governors) said the most senior of the
surviving family member of the The Last Bendahara of Perak Raja Abdul Rashid ibni
Sultan Idris I, with the 8th wife, YAM Tuanku Raja Puan Kechil Aishah Raja Saidin, is
Raja Ubaidah. Who currently is the companion and escort to the Yang Maha Mulia
Raja Zarith Sofia binti Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah, the Sultanah of Johor.
 
But presently she is not well. And, thus said he will try to contact her when time permits.
 
Otherwise we'll have to get hold of Raja Datuk Kamarul Bahrin Shah of SeniBahri Arkitek,
whose late father Raja Ahmad Baharuddin was the eldest son. 
 
That old colonial house is apparently Istana Gaharu, the last bendahara's residence:

Others that caught us our interests during our Bukit Chandan trip were these:

It is called "Baitul Rahmah".
 
The one I told the Bus to slow down for us to look left over the field immediately after 
the Istana Iskandariah.

That was the residence where we MCKK Upper Six Boys used to "lepak" when in
Bukit Chandan that also housed the "Alleykat Band", ran by our friend Raja Ahmad.
A different Raja Ahmad @ Crack who was the bodyguard to the late Sultan Idris, and
(sometimes my bodyguard too) used to live at Istana Kenangan @ Istana Kuning.
Raja Akmar, the silat exponent from GEGS lived there too.
 
See, now they remind me of the good old school days at chandan...hehe...
 
Anyway, we'll try our best.

Oh don't la Norhayati,
You and family should go back to Kuala Kangsar.
Bring your students as well...food there is nice.
 
Instead of where we had buffet lunch at Sayong,
you should try it at New York...and enjoy the River Reviera !
Although current generation don't call it by that name anymore, instead is "Lembah"!
Just because it is in the low lying area next to muara sungai kangsar.
[If New York has Brooklyn, then Kuala Kangsar has New York!]
 
Or try too Yut Loy, along the main road Jalan Kangsar,
famous for its Pau, yang Sultan Pahang suka..
also equally famous is the egg steak!!...for appetiser...hehe...
 
 
I found out that this building is not Baitul Anwar,
 
Instead it should be Baitul Anor : 
  • ‘Anor’ is taken after eldest son of Raja Harun Al-Rashid,
    i.e. Raja Anor Shah from 3rd wife, Raja Mahtra bt Raja Sir Chulan.
  • Location: beside Masjid Ubudiah, Jalan Istana, Bukit Chandan.
  • Status: dilapidated – not suitable for occupancy.
 
And on the Baitul Rahmah : 
 
 
  • ‘Rahmah’ is taken after name of Cik Rahmah bt Ngah Ahmad
    (first wife of Raja Kecil Sulong Harun Al-Rashid)
  • location: near Istana Iskandariah, Bukit Chandan.
  • Description: identical with Baitul Aman.
  • Status: part of ground floor still occupied.
 
No wonder when we were on the way up to view Istana Iskandariah, I told Nadge that the
building I wanted him to see I read was burnt down. I was wrong because the one burnt
was a different building and at different location!
 
Baitul Aman
‘Aman’ is taken after eldest son of Raja Harun Al-Rashid,
i.e. Capt Raja Aman Shah from 2nd wife, Cik Sareah.
  • location: Jalan Raja Muda, Bukit Chandan.
  • description: identical with Baitul Rahmah
  • status: burnt

Anyway Norhayati, I've got it wrong too on Raja Ubaidah.
