Backin 2019 the INTENSE Factory Racing (IFR) team started prototyping and testing new bikes. First was the M279, a mixed wheeled version of our classic M29 downhill bike. This started a four year research and development process that would eventually see our design and engineering teams completely reinvent our downhill bike offering. Gone was the classic VPP/JS Tuned design, and in would come something completely different.

The new INTENSE M1 has 203mm (linear) / 212mm (progressive) of rear travel, 279 mixed wheels, and is built around a 6-link, high-pivot, 6061-T6 aluminum frame. The M1 is a race-proven winner. Designed, developed, and perfected by our engineers and the INTENSE Factory Racing team on the World Cup circuit to be the fastest downhill bike. The M1 Pro is complemented by a selection of components that will elevate the performance and impress any rider. With Fox Factory suspension you get superior control and adjustment. The DT Swiss 350 hubs laced to FR 541 Rims will withstand the rigors of aggressive riding all backed by the TRP DH-7 confidence-inspiring brakes, derailleur, and shifter.

High-pivot bikes, especially in downhill applications, have proven to provide amazing performance and muster great race results. The rearward axle path of the M1 moves the rear wheel out of the way of trail obstacles, helping the bike maintain momentum and control. The position of the idler pulley reduces the effects of chain growth, eliminating pedal kickback, and further enhancing suspension and pedaling performance.

The DT Swiss FR 541 wheelset may not be your first but it aspires to be your last. The updated rim shape improves impact resistance, allowing you to tackle trails with increased confidence. With the reliable DT Swiss 350 Hub and its 36 tooth ratchet system that ensures direct power transfer, this wheelset is ready for anything you want to throw at it. It's a sophisticated yet simple wheelset that keeps you focused on the trail, not your equipment.

The Fox DHX2 Factory Coil Shock blends an ultra-plush feel with exceptional damping performance tailored for downhill riding. We worked closely with our race athletes and directly with FOX tuning experts to find the perfect tune for the M1. Nothing sticks to the ground quite like a coil shock. The DHX2 takes that sensation and fortifies it with sophisticated and progressive damping, and a massive overall tuning range with super low-friction internals to capitalize on the full race-spec magic carpet experience.

In response to the feedback from our race mechanics, we prioritized ease of maintenance when designing the M1. Notable features include externally routed cables for convenient access and standardized 6mm Hex wrench compatibility for all hardware except one collet bolt. There are three 'captured' washers in the linkage hardware, meaning they stay in place and don't fall to the ground when re-installing that pivot bolt after a muddy rebuild. The M1 uses high-end Enduro bearings in all links and features an easy-to-maintain and durable threaded BB.

Are you honestly looking ahead 100% of the time? Looking past the exit of every corner? Always cornering in a perfect body position? Are you always returning to a centered, balanced, neutral position after every rock garden, jump, drop, and obstacle? If your answer is a resounding yes, then it might be time to add the little 1% skills to your foundation training.

Until then, work on mastering your foundation. Your time spent/reward ratio will be much higher than working on skills you lack the foundation to execute.

Tonight was the first night of practice cyclocross races. The cornering techniques I learned in you camp last weekend rock on the cross bike. I was able to carry speed through the corners and off cambers that I could only dream of last year!

My second race was a Super D (much more my style in that there is MUCH less uphill cranking) at Winter Park where I got a second place finish in my age group. 3rd race was a Mountain States Cup Super D race in Copper where I came in tenth. Again no records but still having a total blast.

My friends the same age as me think I am crazy doing this stuff but I think they are crazy to be sitting on their arses. Again, thank you for giving me the confidence to go out there and try some racing and hopefully in the near future I will be in another one of your camps!

Thanks for the e-mail. By the way, after completing your camp in Arizona, I dropped 5 minutes off my previous best lap time at the 12 hours of Temecula mountain bike race (59 to 54 minutes). Obviously, this was a significant breakthrough.

Gene and fellow BetterRiders!

I have been smiling all day long today, thinking about our rad weekend together! I taught 4 of my kids how to do wheelies today and they thought I was super cool for a solid 5 minutes until they had it completely mastered and were smoking past my on their rear wheels.

Thank you forever, Gene, for sharing your passion and deciding to teach. An empowering, motivating, completely exhilarating weekend. I feel like a little kid on Christmas morning with my new toy. It was a total honor to cross paths with you all!

Gene, The first thing I did was buy some cones. My drive way is pretty steep so can do switch backs there. My pedal wheelies are coming along. Yesterday I had a bit of a breakthrough ride with my vision. On a ride with some small drop offs I realized by using the vision technique I was more balanced, more comfortable and jumped further without trying.

Challenge yourself on our lift-serviced downhill mountain biking trails. The Farside Bike Park features 8 gravity-based downhill mountain biking trails that are unique to the area and a skills development area that includes elements designed to help beginner riders develop skills and experience riders hone their techniques.

Coming off a slew of big mountain skiing injuries, I needed to find a way to train in summer and to reinject some athletic purpose in my life. So, I decided to try some downhill mountain biking with the goal of entering some races. Although it looks suspiciously like a motor-cross invasion of the mountain bike scene, downhill mountain biking is actually pretty easy to A) get involved in, and B) get addicted to. Yes, all that armor looks intimidating , but the riders are actually just smiling under their full-face helmets. Trust me.

For those of us who can do without the climb, and prefer adrenalin to endorphins, this is a great time to get into downhill specific biking. The equipment and protection get better every year. More and more DH trails are being built across the country. More and more ski resorts are offering lift-accessed DH trails. Perched on these big bikes at the top of trails are armor-clad couples, groups of girls, tourists, parents, children. Again, it's because under all the armor, it's really, really fun.
