So, my shop van finally bit the bullet!  I was trying for 400,000 miles and she took her last drive at 396,000 mile.....I was more upset that the van didn't make to 400,000 than the enging dying itself....Probably a blessing since the logo and decals were holding the body together......sooooooooooo,

after seeing sticker shock on new vans (ford transit)......I think I need to raise my pick up and delivery rates..... Now I know why my plumber charges me $300 for a 20 min job!....It's his new van!

I drew a map and radius lines and came up with some rates....$20, $40, $60, $90 each way...I called a  new furniture store to see what they charge for delivery and even a close one is $125 on up...

I am thinking about basing it on my shop rate $85/hour  (too low?  I haven't raised it in 10 years)...What do you all charge for it or even offer it?   When I say I charge, you would be surprised at how many people say...Oh, I can just drop it off and pick it up myself....great....that saves me time!...But I do think it is something I would like to continue as I do get some large jobs.....

Open to suggestions and hearing what other people do...

Thanks

WE charge 85/hour for shop work and 85-125 per trip to pickup and deliver ( depending on distance and # of items)

Okay, so I just went through this whole thing about 3 years ago.  Big box truck was on it's last (owned from new but 15 years takes it toll) legs and the addition of "brine" on the streets in the winter started making our ramp seize up no matter how much we lubed it. Fuel economy was like 8 to 10 mpg tops, commercial tags and insurance were costing a fortune.  I did the math....no way could I even see a late model truck with guys on it breaking even.  So I came up with..... I traded my late model Hyundai Sonata for a 2 year old low mileage Santa Fe.  Near 300 h.p. V6 and towing capacity of 2.5 ton.  Did a consult with the local "trailer lady" (don't laugh, she knows her stuff) and we set up a 6 x 12 with a 7 foot interior height and heavy duty 1 ton capacity ramp door.  Trailer has tandem axles with brakes, LED lighting, Z bars for click in cinch straps, bungee cords, bands, etc.  Class III hitch was a 30 minute bolt-in and my local tow people wired an infinitely adjustable brake controller right to my dash.  Rear backup camera on my dash let's me hitch up in like 5 minutes or so and off we go.  Worst mileage I've ever gotten with a full load was 12 mpg and normal is about 15 or 16.  The whole rig ran me like $5000 and my vehicle is still my nice vehicle with heated seats.  We now actually make money on pickup and delivery   My insurance and plates are downright cheap.  And as for charging...we give local folks a great deal at $29 each way (that is about 3 miles out at most) but that can go out to $200 each way depending on where, what, how many steps, access, etc.... You get it....

Well I am seeing I definitely need to raise my rates for sure!    I do plan on getting a trailer at a later date as I sometimes need more room or want to store a car in it over the winter....but I hate dragging a trailer around all the time....but yeah, its tough justifying spending 45k on a van...I do put my logo wrap all over it and call is a billboard on wheels... so that would help with the payment (taking away from advertising budget)...I'll keep looking I guess.....but I am curious to what other people charge....I think I may just figure my shop rate + 20% for the van.....
