We are not out of the woods on the Wayne State Police issue yet. While it is great that we had 36 letters to the Board of Governors, over 250 e mail addresses that receive this newsletter made no response.

That saddens me.

It is never too late.

All the letters submitted can be accessed here:  https://www.dropbox.com/sh/jhdlb3a32apf0fa/WN4C0QsGBx

We were reminded of the problem at the recent neighborhood meeting by someone with first hand knowledge of the inner workings.

Subject: Block Club Meeting - Thursday 16th May

Hi all,

Our block club is due to meet again this Thursday, May 16th at 7pm.

We are planning to get together on the vacant lot at Alexandrine and Commonwealth, weather permitting. If it feels too cold or rainy, we'll meet instead at Cindy's house, 4117 Commonwealth.

If the weather is looking good, it'd be great if we could procure a BBQ. Anyone got one they would be willing to wheel along?

I understand from Evan that he has been in contact with Lt Scott of WSPD, about coming along to the meeting, so hopefully he'll be able to make it and talk to us. He was the officer that did the 'street smarts' event last week, so he should certainly have some useful tips for us.
Evan, please can you confirm his attendance when you know for sure?

I will make flyers and get them delivered in the next day or two.

Thanks!

Sophie

Next week is the SEMCOG Executive Committee meeting: Thursday, May 16 at 1 pm in SEMCOGoffices, 1001 Woodward, 14th floor, downtown Detroit. If you can be there, please attend and ask the Executive Committee not to approve the draft 2040 Plan with the proposed I-94 and I-75 expansions.

If you can't make it, do make sure to contact your elected leaders beforehand. Find your representatives on the Executive Committee here; Detroit's reps are Mayor Bing, Charles Pugh, and Gary Brown.

As you may have heard, MDOT is planning to fix 94 over the next several years.  Many of these fixes are overdue and well-needed.  Unfortunately, this project also includes half-baked and poorly thought out plans to:

Eliminate several bridges in the Midtown area, especially bridges for people walking or biking only, of which we have many, plus 3rd, John R, Beaubien and other road crossings. (including two pedestrian bridges - mainly the one from Matthei Field to WSU)
Disregard the improvements in the Midtown and New Center area and the increased need for maintaining connections and improving the street experience to continue the momentum.
Ignore creative solutions to highway repairs like the Columbus OH "cap" over I-670.

Ignore the effect of induced demand and how widening increases rather than reduces congestion. (I94 widening will reduce compute by 90 seconds - so people can get out of the city faster)

It's also based on a severely outdated 1990s plan that was barely approved, and comprehensively criticized and debunked by TRU and other groups at the time.

No consideration for public transportation - I wish you could have seen and heard Dr. Joe Grengs', professor of transportation planning at the University of Michigan, presentation at the meeting on Thursday.

Detroit is one vote of all the municipalities in the 7 counties in SEMCOG !

Detroit will have to pay $87 million for it's share of the I 94 project which our bus system dies.

Historical building - some homes in Woodbridge and the Sound Studio on Second will be destroyed.

FROM A TOTALLY RELIABLE SOURCE

cool thing in hood.
We have two valedictorians in Woodbridge who live a block away from each other.
Kendall Cockrell from Cass Tech and our Zach from Cabrini.

Also, Cordelia Ziraldo has a new name.
No, she did not get married and change her name. The new name is:  "Doctor"
DOCTOR Cordelia Ziraldo. She successfully defended her dissertation in Carnegie Mellon.
Personal note: Cordelia has always been amazing. I will never forget when she babysat our twins. Once I indiscreetly asked when one she liked the most. Her response: "The one I had seen most recently."
