I had no luck Saturday recruiting at Honk in Somerville.  I walked around with the Sousaphone and a bell cover saying “join the Worcester Honk band ask me for info”.  Two people spoke with me – both had cousins living in Worcester that might be interested.  I gave them my contact info but I’m not encouraged.

I’m going to drop out of the band.  There has to be 50 people in greater Worcester who want to play in this kind of band but we just can’t find them.  It feels like we’re killing time and spinning our wheels so I’m going to move on.

One thing that was really discouraging was to see a top shelf Honk band in action.  The Riverhawk Party band started as a group of UMass Lowell students.  They had 20 people performing Saturday.  Five standard trombones, one bass trombone, two tubas, one bass drum, one snare drum, three trumpets, three or four saxes, clarinets, an oboe, maybe some other stuff.  Incredible.  Someone ought to get hold of them and ask them to play a set at the Firehouse or some other place.

Good luck all.

Dean, those folks are all Umass Lowell music students.  obviously they are going to be "top notch".  I thought they were an okay band, but their a-policial stance turned me off.  I started this band to help the community.  But I understand the lack of commitment is discouraging.  Also I know you and Charlie commute from Metro west and other places outside of Worcester, so it's hard to jam without the productivity.

I actually rode the Red line with them to get to the Pick up band rehearsal and parade.  They're nice kids.   But again, I think the Worcester Ice Cream Social is more of an activist band than a party band.

I'm still interested in making this happen.  I'm going to talk to my band Speaker for the Dead and see if we can get a recruitment through them.

Anyways, I'm sorry Dean, it's been great playing with you.  Good luck on your other endeavors.

Hi Dean,

Very sorry to hear you go, but understandable with your commute and our irregular rehersal schedule and attendance. Thanks for the effort to keep the band going.

I'd still love to reherse, and Tuesdays are still fine for me. But yeah, we need voices.

Otto
