Dear all,

This EU advancement can be an example for a UN decision to come out of  UN CSD19 in May, a small first step.

Best greetings,

Uranium Mining: EU wants to strengthen rules

Thursday 17 March 2011

On 14 March, the EU Council of Ministers published in accordance with theEuropean Commission ia paper for better control of uranium mines in Europe.

The paper explains how stronger control of uranium mines is necessary.
In the past, the processing of uranium in the Central and Eastern Europe lead to significant environmental and health problems. The paper therefore argues for a strengthening of existing EU rules, in particular for the Central and Eastern European countries. The Euratom treaty also committed the EU Member States in 2012 to preform an inventory of closed installations and to be examined for negative environmental effects of radiation.The EU Commission wants in 2011 to develop a guidance document for these inventories. [fl]
