Our PhD Programs
These programs are i) Operations Management / Operations Research and ii) Statistics. Both programs are centered on mathematically rigorous research and include a generous 5 -year funding package (stipend, tuition, health and dental insurance, etc.).
Applicants with backgrounds in any quantitative field (computer science, operations research, mathematics, industrial engineering, statistics, physics, etc.) are encouraged to apply. Strong applicants will also have research experience in a related quantitative discipline. Prior exposure to business discipline is not required; indeed, most of our admitted candidates have little or no prior business background.
Doctoral students typically work closely with multiple tenured, and tenure-track, mentors throughout their dissertation and benefit from the very low student-to-faculty ratio in the program. Many of our graduates go on to take tenure-track positions at top universities in academia or take top data science jobs in industry.
Research
Faculty at DSO are working on cutting-edge research on problems across all areas of data science. A small sample includes:
- Performing statistical inference at scale from large unstructured data
- Devising new machine learning methods for causal inference, personalized medicine, and evidence-based policy interventions
- Designing, optimizing and deploying decision-making systems to ensure equity, efficiency, and sustainability’s in settings from public housing allocation to empowering small shareholder farmers
- Reimagining online platforms to fight fake news and promote transparency
