The Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (https://is.mpg.de/) is one of Europe’s leading research institutes for artificial intelligence, machine learning, and intelligent systems. The institute collaborates with multiple universities to offer highly competitive, fully funded PhD positions. Co-located between Tübingen and Stuttgart, Germany, the institute is within easy reach by public transportation from major European cities. Students have access to leading researchers in the field, generous research budgets, outstanding compute facilities, and numerous benefits in a vibrant academic environment.

Below are details on three PhD programs to choose from. If in doubt about which to choose, feel free to apply to all. The deadline for applications is November 15, 2023.

International Max Planck Research School for Intelligent Systems (IMPRS-IS)

The International Max Planck Research School for Intelligent Systems (IMPRS-IS) brings together the MPI for Intelligent Systems with the University of Stuttgart and the University of Tübingen to form a highly visible and unique graduate school of internationally recognized faculty.

Finalists will be invited to selection interviews that will take place from February 1 to 9, 2024. For further information, please visit: https://imprs.is.mpg.de

Max Planck ETH Center for Learning Systems (CLS) PhD program

The CLS doctoral training program offers a unique fellowship program, where PhD students are co-supervised by one advisor from ETH Zurich and one from the Max Planck Institute. Each PhD fellow has a primary location (chosen based on interests and match) and spends one year at the other location as well. In this highly competitive program, PhD students are expected to take advantage of the opportunities offered by both organizations and to actively seek cross-group collaborations. Students ultimately obtain their doctoral degree from ETH Zurich.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to interview at the CLS2024 Selection Symposium on March 4-5, 2024.

European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) PhD program

The ELLIS PhD program is a key pillar of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) initiative. The goal is to foster and educate the best talent in machine learning and related research areas by pairing outstanding students with leading academic and industrial researchers in Europe. There are dozens of partnering universities across Europe, giving applicants access to leading faculty across Europe. In particular, applicants can select faculty affiliated with ELLIS at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems. The ELLIS PhD Program offers a variety of networking and training activities, including summer schools and workshops.
