The Big Data Institute, University of Oxford, is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher to join a collaboration between the University of Oxford and GSK focused on biostatistics and artificial intelligence (AI) for application in medicine, with a primary focus on optimising clinical trial design.

The postholder will join an interdisciplinary team contributing to ambitious cross-disciplinary research spanning operations research, statistics, machine learning, management science, and clinical applications. The role is based within the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the Big Data Institute, with strong links to departments across the University including Engineering Science, Computer Science, Statistics and Saïd Business School.

The Oxford-GSK Collaboration in Biostatistics and Artificial Intelligence in Medicine draws upon expertise across Oxford while prioritising the development of innovative statistical and AI methodologies that translate directly to medical and biopharmaceutical research. The programme is led by Professor Chris Holmes and Dr Nicky Best and supports small teams of researchers and data scientists working closely with senior Oxford and GSK scientists to address major challenges in developing new medicines.

Current thematic areas include:

  • Clinical trials, models and simulation
  • Intelligent data gathering
  • Causal reasoning
  • Uncertainty in large language models
  • Multiomic machine learning across biobanks
  • Overcoming model misspecification

The successful applicant will contribute to the development of novel methodologies and “pathfinder” projects related to clinical trial design, drug discovery, and operational efficiency. Responsibilities include developing and applying quantitative methods, analysing complex datasets, refining theoretical approaches, and contributing to collaborative interdisciplinary research activities.

Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD/DPhil in a relevant quantitative discipline such as statistics, biostatistics, operations research, mathematics, computer science, engineering, or a related field. Candidates should have research experience in areas such as machine learning, optimisation, sequential decision-making, or biostatistics, evidenced by publications or equivalent outputs.

The position is offered full-time on a fixed-term contract until 30 September 2028 and is funded by GSK.

The post is based at:
Big Data Institute,
Li Ka Shing Centre for Health Information and Discovery,
Old Road Campus,
Headington,
Oxford OX3 7LF,

as well as working at Saïd Business School, Oxford.

Applications should be submitted online and must include:

  • a CV
  • a supporting statement explaining how the applicant meets the selection criteria

Only applications received before 12 midday on Wednesday 20 May 2026 will be considered.
