** Deadline: May 20th, 2026
** Preferred start date: June - September, 2026
** Duration: up to 4 years

About the Lab & Roles

Join the Responsible Machine Learning Group at the Faculty of Computer Science. Led by Prof. Dr. Martin Pawelczyk, who recently joined the University of Vienna after a Postdoc at Harvard University, our research sits at the intersection of AI Safety and Data-Centric AI. We aim to make large-scale ML more reliable, transparent, and aligned with human values.

You will have the opportunity to develop methods, invent algorithms, and publish at top-tier venues across our core focus areas:

  • Data-Centric AI: Machine unlearning, privacy-preserving techniques, and robust data curation for LLMs/VLMs.

  • AI Safety / Agentic AI: Ensuring robust alignment and exploring multi-agent systems.

  • Science of Deep Learning (XAI): Mechanistic interpretability and understanding fundamental drivers of model performance.

  • Efficiency: Streamlining large-scale model experimentation and training.

Who we are looking for
  • A completed (or near completion) Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, or a related quantitative field.

  • Strong programming skills in Python and ideally a major deep learning framework (e.g., PyTorch, JAX).

  • An early track record of research (e.g., a high-quality Master's thesis, open-source contributions, or workshop papers).

  • Desirable: Experience training large-scale models in distributed settings or familiarity with cluster computing (e.g., SLURM).

What we offer
  • Fully Funded Positions: A competitive pre-doctoral salary (,~EUR 3,776.10/month on a full-time basis, paid 14 times a year).

  • Duration: Up to 4 years (initial 1.5-year contract with automatic extension based on progress).

  • World-class Location: Live and work in Vienna, consistently ranked as the world's most livable city.

  • Start Date:  June - September, 2026.

How to Apply

To apply officially, please submit your CV, a cover letter stating your earliest start date and motivation, a copy of your thesis (or extended abstract), and official transcripts via the University of Vienna's career portal.

If you have any questions about the roles, the lab, or moving to Vienna, please feel free to reach out to me directly at martin.p...@univie.ac.at.

I look forward to hearing from you!
