Dear Students,
You have until Sunday, December 30 to write the answer to this
question:

Who is "un-naming" all the animals--and why do you think she is doing
it?

Keep in mind that this is a philosophical, perhaps even religious
story, that draws on religious stories common to Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam. But this story is given new perspective here.

Best,
Alison

hello everyone.
i think that by unnaming all the animals the narrator tries to
maintain equality among them. although we may think that there is
nothing in names as they are just collection of letters (voices) they
psyhcologically give meanings. for example. the name "rabbit" does not
give the same effect as when we hear the name "lion". lion is more
frightening. however it creates diffuculty in speaking, in pointing
exactly to a certain animal. so as everything is not equal it has no
use in attempting to equalise them.

Sometimes we ask to ourselves why this is named like this or not
another name. By means of naming we can recognize the things and
persons. In this story we can find philosophical context, by means of
unnaming the woman wants to make us to believe that everything is same
in the world or she wants to mix everything in the world into the same
place and equalize them. In contrast I think that by naming we can
find and differentiate things. For instance Good and Evil are the
names of two things and seeing each of them we can understand which
action or thing is good or visa versa. The author wants to compare
this aspect in animals. For example fox and lion. Two names are
different in fox we see trick and in lion we can see proud or power.
We don't know who first named things and names first but the obvious
thing is that we use them. Need of communication made people name the
things and object surrounding them.
Also the woman can thing that in the name of man there is superiority
and why we don't call women as men and men as women. The interesting
thing is that whether you try to change it the society would make new
women (which is really men) superior or powerful, the new named women
as men (which is women) will be again women with same behavior like
today and like in past. The name of men can be named as women but
nothing would be changed. Men are man, women are woman. Maybe it is
strange and philosophical but for me there is no sense to change names
or unname the things.
Women ender this name can do many things and they have duties and they
are the member of this society. By unnaming you can't achieve balance
in society. Names play really big role in society but in actions and
reaction it doesn't have power.
If wolf eats sheep. We see this sentence in "named world" imagine it
in "unnamed world" this eats that. You are naming everything this and
that, but the fact is that you are also naming not as wolf and sheep
but like this and that. Naming will always exist and if we equalize
everything we don't have to search it in naming but in our behaviors.
This topic can be discussed a lot.
Finally the author unnames them, animals and she asks very big
question to herself and I think that she couldn't find the answer; we
have to find the answer in society and in behaviors not in names. If
some one named Eldar and does very good things for society and it
doesn't mean that all Eldars will do same thing maybe someone can do
bad things? As a result we can't say that names play role in our
behaviors. The women can be seen as weak, but sometimes we see that
women do the perfect thing that even man can't do it.

This is a very strange story. I don't understand it exactly. But my
opinion is that the woman "un-naming" all the animals because she
wants to unite them, to take them together. She doesn't divide them.
Maybe with this she shows that it makes no difference, either lion,
rabbit, sheep, cat, dog...-they are all animals. And also men, women-
they are all humans. The main side isn't their superiority, weakness,
attractivness, etc.
I think that names are important. As Eldar says, by means of naming we
can recognize the things and persons. Some people have strange names.
And some of them don't know their name's meanings. When baby borns,
all say that: "Let him grow up with his name!"

it is a short story. The genre of this story is literary fantasy. The
meaning of the story is a liitle comprehensible. This story talks
about creature, universe, Adam, and Eve. Saying that she unnames them
means the narrator wants to create equal between animals and them. She
wants to take back their names. The author rewrite genesis. For
example: calling tiger as its meaning, we imagine at once brave,
honest, and someting like this. But due ti its literal meaning it does
not mean anything. It is a unit of the sounds and letters. In the story
is told about the creation and the creator GOD. Althugh the story was
aken from the religious, the author rewrited due to her idea and
feeling.

The author unnames "she"

Sorry for unnaming the author,
This story is based on Genesis creation story, thus the unnamed woman
here is Eve, the only woman who perceives that all things in the world
and her own creation are impeded by Adam's act of naming. She attempts
to dismiss the power over the act of naming, unnaming the names of
things and her name as well). She aims to remove such limitation and
absolute control of the men (Adam's privilege) over "the others." Her
effort to merge all creatures to make them oneness seems to be a
transformation that goes beyond the language. Furthermore, she tries
to get rid of manly tongues of Earth, and misogynist view, creating a
new, simple language which doesn't serve any division between
creatures. Her appeal to animals probably indicates the obvious and
documentable connection between woman and animals. The designation
"man-human" and "woman-animal" is clearly expressed here, that's the
author looks to the animal silence, existence and their language to
state her female relationship with the other. One can surmise that the
issue of limited woman language is more emphasized in this story.
According to the author, this limitation created by men must be
immediately taken away--the things must be as simple as before when God
created them. For Adam's well-intentioned act of naming in his time,
doesn't work today considered as fatal action, limiting woman
language, their rights and equality. Methinks, the reason for their
limitation in language is not only because of male domination and
creation of it, but of misapprehension of what we mean when we use it.
The reality is probably what we perceive. And one's perception depends
on what they express with their five senses by the help of language.
That's every human being is free what they think and express. The
concept of generalization and prejudice must firstly be removed from
our minds, paving for the objective thoughts and approaches. God
created us as man and woman not to see each other inferior, but keep
loving, helping and bringing up child in calm and peace. But the
existences of Devil and of our evil deeds lead us to fight, kill each
other, submitting to Devil's seduction and leaving God's order.
Regardless of sex, we must take His orders into account, for He
(according to Islam, "He--Allah" is sexless, not was born, and bore)
knows everything and is much closer to us than we are. I appreciate
the writer's new perspective, but think it won't change anything, not
because of her sex, but our limited knowledge compared to God's.
Everything is written in God's holy book(s), just never try to change
it but live as what God states.

Hi all,

It is my view that unnaming all the animals tried to explain equality
and join them together.

In addition this story is about creature,Adam and Eve.
Showing that there is no difference between lion, rabbit, cat, all of
them are animals.. And also men, women- both of them are humankind.
And also the author rewrite genesis. The names given in this story to
the animal, does not depend on their special.
lion-power and the rabbit-crowd.
Like that the names which given the people is also strange. Maybe they
can not move the meaning or speciality of their meaning.

hi people how is it going life?

When we get to know someone or something really well we sometimes use
a special name, a nick name. A nick name is really a name over and
above the name that something or someone already carries. i would say
that, with the nick name we indicate our special relation to something
or someone. We make our world knowable by giving names,or let us say
assigning labels to them. But nicknames and proper names serve a
special function.

in fact giving names is a most peculiar act. In order to explore the
living relations that we maintain with the world we first need to un-
name things. In the short story "She Unnames Them" the science fiction
author Ursula Le Guin hints at what happens in un-naming.

for me Ursula in her let's say story or whatever you say strives to
say that after the unnaming she had discovered with surprise how
close she felt to the creatures around her. They seemed far closer
than when their names had stood between myself and them like a clear
barrier: so close that my fear of them and their fear of me became one
and the same fear. i don't know how much are you going to agree with
my ideas. sometimes we need to hide our names to get more and detailed
information about something or to protect ourselves from something. at
the end of my word i would say that reflecting on words or names helps
us to realize how closely related language is to thinking and to our
ways of being in the world. i have two questions to you. But what
occurs when we unname things is a question that is rarely asked. Can
we truly erase the words we give to the things that are important to
us?

Hi to everyone

Perhaps this story is religious but I really have difficulty to figure
out who is (she) that unnames the animals.Only God has the ability to
name or unname the animals. We say (he) to God but in this story we
meet the (she). In the creation of the universe God begins to name
everything even animals.God also name the human-beings called Adam and
Eve. Because of eating the apple(which God had forbidden them to eat)
God wants them to leave the Garden of Eden. They begin to live their
own life and perhaps in their later life they themselves name their
children .It could be because of this God gives challange to human -
beings to name things which they consider favourable to them.As we see
in modern life people name but not God, but of course people fill the
strength of God.

As I said above we call (he) to God, but here we see (she). Perhaps
this the author herself that unnames the animals. Perhaps she has her
own animals and she likes to name or unname them.
Ms.Alison you know this author . If it is so or not so, please send
some information to me.

For this term as I know this is our last discussion for google group
question. I thank you Ms.Alison for creating this group for us because
before we had not such opportunity. I also want to say to you Merry

Hi everybody. Happy New Year. Sorry for being late. She is Eve, a
woman, again with problems. I think there is a connection between Adam
and Eve's communication manner and Eve's will of unnaming of animals.
In the story Eve's conversation with Adam shows that there is a mutual
problem between them. Adam is indifferent for any of Eve's words. He
doesn't take her in serious, ignores her. For this fact we can argue
that man- woman problem has been exited since their time. This problem
becomes the reason of her will to unname the animals. As soon as she
feels this oppression she tries to do something in her own way to
solve this problem. She feels, and understands her oppression by her
man and this law of life seems to her unpleasant. That is why she
tries to make changes in her own way, to end these distinctions which
exit between the species.
Although all of the species are connected under one single name
"Animal", they serve different functions, all of them have various
powers, abilities. Wolves, tigers, foxes, rabbits, different kinds of
birds don't posses the same power in the nature. Powerful, big animals
oppress rabbits, birds in turn rabbits birds oppress smaller ones and
insects. This chain of oppressions exit among animals, and Eve's
attempt to unname them was useless. As she was not able to preserve
this unnameness of animals, she could not change the barrier between
male and female. Today all the animals have got their own names and
everything remains the same way. Eve's will taking away the
distinction among animals and between men still remains undone... See
you NEXT YEAR!

This story is a new perspective for the Genesis creation story. The
unnamed woman who "went to Adam" to return her and other animals'
names back to him is Eve. She is taking this action to remove the
"clear barrier" between herself and them. She doesn't want to let "the
hunter could not be told from the hunted, nor the eater from the
food." She thinks it's useless recently, albeit was so useful before.
Adam doesn't give heed to her request, just saying "OK, fine, dear."
She first states the discussion among animals about the matter of
"unnaming." Although some animals and birds don't agree first to be
known as "unnamed", after the melting of the snow they come to the
agreement at last. Therefore, she wants to provide this consensus
among people as well. She becomes aware of her inability to explain
herself in such unequal circumstance where Adam has the power and
dominancy over Eve and other creatures. She thus tries to establish
new, single language in which woman expression is equal to man's.
However, it seems impossible to create such fantastic language, yet
her message given to us can be arranged by people, stopping prejudice,
superiority and other unpleasant designations. For we are all
servitude to Him, the Almighty God.

Thanks
Vusale

Though it is very short story. But understanding it is more
difficult..When I read this story firstly I think by 'unnaming things'
she wants to show equality of women and men, that both of them are
humankind. As she know men domain. That's why she wants show equality of
everything.
Also there is another opinion name are very important in our life in
our society. When we say for example tiger, snake we afraid.Because name
say us something not everything. In a word name are very important in

Hi my Friends!
Firstly, I want to say that this story is very hard for me to
understand. Writer writes this story from philosophical aspect. But I
have some thoughts which I want to share with you. I think this SHE is
Eve and she tries to un-naming all creatures. I think she wants to
show all world`s people that God created them and they are equally. I
think this she wants to remember that God created them and everything
can be when God wants. People are tend to categorize themselves and to
show their power. We can see this point in every part of our life. God
created us and while creation God does not say that you are this you
are that. God created as equally and it is not normal to consider
ourselves in high position from others. I think by un-naming we can
get this effect. But of course today it is impossible to live without
names. Names play in our life very important role and unfortunately it
makes us to categorize ourselves. But today also people do not
evaluate person for his name. They evaluate person with his/ her heart
and behaviors. This is very beautiful. For me name don`t fill person
but person fill name.

Hi Teacher and friends!

The text is really very complicated and takes a lot of time to
understand and say one's thoughts about it.There are several themes
that can be connected with"She unnames them them".For ex:language and
reality," class differences", equality among living things- humans and
animals, equality between men and women etc.Leguin exposes language by
the act of unnaming. We know that language is created by naming living
beings and things. Thus language shapes our thinking. In Leguins view
language categorizes everything for instance "the faction of
yaks","the faction of dogs"," the faction of insects"etc. This
categorization makes seperation among animals. When Eve unnames animals
she says that anyone is free to choose individual name. For ex;Rover,
Folly, Mussy, Pussy etc., but not "dog" "flea","fish"etc.By unnaming
herself too , she doesnot make an exception, thus she identifies with
animals, becomes equal to them.Leguin here likens womens' situation to
animals. The name Eve is given to her by Adam and his father. The author
makes an anology between animals muteness with womens'.Both animal and
woman are named by male.
In the story Eve shows that some animals are given more importance
for ex yaks could protest. But some ubiquitous creatures were called by
many different names, cats donot know that weather they had a name or
not.Eve wants to show that animals were not named consciencously. So
the unnaming will erase all these problems
I think by means of animals categorization , Leguin also refers to
classes of people. For instance yaks can be upper classes( for they
were called only "yak" for many years) , domestic animals to working
classes, fleas, rats etc who is in everywhere to beggars tramps etc.The
last main theme I want to talk about is men-women equality.Eve seems
to be rebellious toward male dominance. She thinks Adam haven't done
perfect naming.Animals are not happy, ignore their names, and her own
name doesn't suit her much. She wants to give it back to him and his
father"God". Here Leguin criticises religion. We see Adam ignors her
intentions, he only needs her in cooking, so gives her less
importance. That is why she is against male dominance and wants
equality.
I think by getting rid of language we can not solve all of these
problems. Language is not the main problem, but wrong handling it is
one.

Unnaming the entire animals narrator thought that, human stay
in high level than animals. Because human the highest creature of God.
For narrator if the animals called, they would be in the same level
with human.
But, in reality we must give name to things for divided them to
each other.
For example, we go to the store and want to buy products, such as
milk, yoghurt, potatoes... How we can buy these products without names.
Because when we buy something, we say the product name to saleswoman.
When people address to each other, they couldn't say she/he.
Because, for example: In the class teacher call a pupil to the
blackboard. If teacher will call pupil as "you" or "she/he", pupils
will become confused. But if teacher would say concrete name, Leyla,
Elnare... it is clear.
That is, Unnaming animals are not a good idea. Everything need
name, also animals. With name people distinguish things, animals to
each other.

Hi everybody
I think the woman who unnames the animals is Eve from religious point
of view. 'They seemed far closer than when their names had stood
between myself and them like a clear barrier: so close that my fear of
them and their fear of me became one same fear. And the attraction
that many of us felt, the desire to feel or rub or caress one
anotherís scales or skin or feathers or fur, taste one anotherís blood

the fear, and the hunter could not be told from the hunted, nor the
eater from the food She says that when animals became unnamed the fair
among animals and between animal and human arise and sincere
reltionship forms.
'If we approach it as real thing we'll see it has meaning in real
life. For ex suppose you have an acquaintance and you call him a
teacher and if you ask him a difficult question related to his
profession he'll get confused and you 'll consider him ignorant and
our relation will weaken. If you approach him not categorizing his
name(teacher) everything will be okay.An other example One says to
you' politics' are liars .It means that he insults you by telling this
name if you are political figure. If you aren't political figure the
name make you hate to political figures.
By unnaming them her intention were to keep close relationship among
creatures overall the world

First of all I want congratulate your holiday. Happy New Year!
A Relaxed Mind, A Peaceful Soul, A Joyful Spirit, A Healthy Body &
Heart full of Love... All these are my Prayers for you...Wish a Happy
New Year to All of You My Friends!

Now about the story: I have two ideas about the Eve's behaviour.
1)She wants to show all people that what will happen if they would
not have the name-importance of our name.
Why we need our name? It is help to people to prove their
identity, their existence and Ursula wants to show us the world
without the name, it will help to people see how their names is
important for them, and why they need a name, how would be our life if
all creatures in the world would be equal no name, no differences
between them all are same, animals, humans, plants, nature- monotony.
Our names make us different from each others and we feel ourselves
individual -sometimes we confused when somebody has our name and
imagine the world when no one has a name it was equal with= all people
have same name. Stability, no changing, progress!

Then another important point is Adam's reaction to all these- he
does not pay attention to the Eve's action: "He continued to do what
he was doing and take no notice of anything else." It was another
story where man do not notice what woman do and I think it shows us
that even such kind of important changing in human life do not have
any meaning because it was done by woman and again women was taken as
minor creation in comparison with the men.

2)It was unfairness against to people as we can not choose our
names but somebody chooses it for us.
I never think about it before- why somebody especially my parent
chose my name? Can I change my name? Why not? Why I need it? What will
be if I name myself Narmin or Aida? How I will feel myself after new
name? I do not no exactly but I think I will not be same Sevil,
because new name will come with new characteristics, with new identity
but I do not want it- I'm very happy now and I love my name because my
uncle call me like that and there was the story behind this name. My
uncle before going to army chooses this name because at that time
"Sevil" was very famous opera in Azerbaijan-main character Sevil was a
first woman who throws her veil- which symbolizes the freedom of the
women.
Thank You and Happy New Year!

Hello everybody
I read this story but it is a bit complicated and I couldn't
understand completely.I couln't infer who the woman that unnames the
animals in this story.Perhaps the author herself unnames the animals
because I couldn't infer a character or she can be Eve herself. If she
is Eve again and again we face with the woman problem and the works
that shows the equality of woman and man.And this problem can be the
reason of Eve to unname the animals. In my opinion she tries to tell
the equality of all creatures with unnaming the animals. All creatures
have the equality and this is told with unnaming the animals.Names are
not important all of them have the equality. This can be seen as the
equality of lions, cats, elephants etc.. and the equality of man and
woman. The common thing in the equality is that all creatures have the
right to live. But in my opinion names are important.Because these
names are the symbols of the speciality of those creatures and the
nature has some rules. If every creature was equal nature's balance
wouldn't be good. The inequality of the creatures is the biggest rule
of the nature and this makes the balance to go on.
In addition to these, this story is about the creation of Adam and
Eve.This makes a religious background to the story and shows the
equality to the reader.

Happy New Year 

Story - very simple in surface, too difficult when you go deeper. In
the story a woman un-names all the animals. While un-naming she
encounters different problems by means of pets, yaks. The most
interesting parts of the story are the animals which protested to give
their names, while some gave with enthusiasm and how they did it. Now
coming to the question “who is un-naming the animals?” the answer is
‘Eve’ from the story “Adam and Eve” told in the book of Genesis. It is
clearly shown in the story: “…I resolutely put anxiety away, went to
Adam, and said: You and your father lent me this – gave it to me,
actually. …” this sentence clearly shows the relation of the story
with religious story of Adam and Eve, the first man and woman created
by God – Father – according to Judaism, Christianity and Islam (Torah,
Bible, and Quran). God then creates animals and Adam names them. But
in Eve tries to unnamed them according to the story. Besides of un-
naming the animals she as well gives her name back for not making any
exception.
The main reason of her un-naming the animals is, as she says, to
remove the barrier among them. She sees the names as barrier and
thinks that without names they all are much closer. Without names they
are like one. Here one can have a question “how the names can be
barrier?” For example, think of the animal name, let it be “serpent”.
As we know there is enmity between serpent and people according to the
religion. So we always see serpent as danger, full of poison. By
having bad connotations of the name of serpent we never see its good
or useful sides by hearing it. Besides if one group has bad name it
does not mean all its members are bad. What I want to say is that
sometimes it is the name which is bad not its carrier/ owner. And may
be she tried to remove this obstacle. But the interesting thing is
that in the last paragraph we can see how she feels after un-naming,
i.e. she herself sees that it not so easy to get along without names.
Now it is more difficult to talk.
I do not think there is someone who is for taking away the names,
neither do I. Names make our life much more easy. Even when we think,
we think by names.
We grow by our names, and have their meanings as our features. Thus
it is very important having good names.

Wish U All Good in the Next Year.

In general, we give the name to the things to know and choose them
from the others. Rename is to give somebody or something a new name.
If we don't know the name of the nouns, these nouns will be unnaming

From Aynure Ali-Zade:
Good evening my dear friends and my lovely teacher. Firstly this story
mixed my brain. But then I began to think. If she unnamed the animals.
Why GOD created all alive. Because we know that, GOD created humans,
animals and plants like alive. For distinguish them GOD divided them
into three parts: 1) humans; 2) animals; 3) plants. At the same time
he gave a name to them. If GOD did not want unnamed ADAM and HAVVA, he
could be named HAVVA as a woman, ADAM as a man. As the result he
unnamed them. But we see that GOD named every his creation. For e.g.
his messengers, his prophets. All of these persons he gave a name.
If we do not named the animals, how we can see the differences between
ant and elephant, between fox and chicken. Our scientists investigated
over the animals. And saw which animals in which characters. They
affirmed that foxes are sly, ants are hard working, lines are strong,
rabbits are cowardly, bears are lazy and ext. if not knowing their
names how we distinguish them from one another. For e.g. if someone
asks: which animal is strong or which animal is sly? How we can answer
if the animals have not a name. That is why I do not agree HAVVA'S
saying. In one think I am also is not agreed. Named animals like
human's name. For e.g. named a dog like Muxtar. We know that Muxtar is
a human's name. that is why in my opinion named animals like this is
wrong. But unnamed all animals is not true. It is HAVVA'S opinion. If
she had thought this problem comprehensibly and had thought why GOD
gave her a name, may be she did not be think so.

From Elshen Mecidov:

Hello Teacher. You gave us this question. I want to answer this
question by my mind:
Ursula's this work context is near to other woman writers' works but
this work in essence another meaning attains. She had already
persuaded the animals and the birds and the insects and the fishes to
accept namelessness. They had agreed and decided to give back their
names. For most of them the act of unnaming had been very easy since
the names given to them had left them utterly indifferent. Work is of
abstract character. Every human, animal has name to identify. Every
being knows with naming in the life. "The god that can be named is not
the eternal God." I think this work is connected with direct women.
Women were respected nameless slaves of that society. Even they were
equated to animal. They were looking at women as valueless being.

Happy New Year.
This story is short but it has a deep meaning.I read it 2 times and
at last i understand what is going here. Now lets come to question. I
think she is Eve.Why do i think so? Becouse here Adam's name is
clearly shown and mentioned and also she played with animals day and
night. It shows that this person lived many centures before.
This story has relation with religion. We know from Bible that God
created the Earth in 7 days. Before creating people,God created day
and night, land and sky, then he seperated water from water, next he
created animals for their types for fulling the Earth and at the end
he created two person. One of them was man, another one was woman.Allah
called man Adam and woman Eve and said people to contol them and
use.So many centures before the animals had no names. But in this story
it is said that she wanted to give back gift which was lent her from
Adam's father.I think this gifts are animals' names.
Here Eve tried to unname all the animals becouse she wanted to feel
herself close to them. She liked when she saw one of them swim or fly
or trot or crowl across her way or over her skin or stalk her in the
night or go along beside her for a while in the day. She saw their
names barrier between herself and them.May be it is true.It is
perceived psychologically that lion, tiger, serpent or another wild
animals can harm the person and that is why in every person's mind
appeares fear when people see them. Also here in this text for
reducing her fear,Eve decided to unmame them, made them equal for
herself.
But in now days, people can't unname them. Everything must have name
for identifing. In another case people confused. So it is very
important.

Who is "un-naming" all the animals --and why do you think she is
doing
it?
It is Eve who unnames them -animals. You see, her name in not called
or shown in this story. And only in the second part of story ,she
speak with Adam and as you know from Kuran and Bible, Adam live in the
earth only with Eve. They first lived in the Heaven. But eating
forbidden food, they were thrown to Earth. On the earth, they repent
and God forgive them. But they stay there all their life. And in this
story "She unnames them" the words "house, ocean" made me completely
realize that it is Eve who is narrator, unnnamer of animals, speaker
with Adam. Because, I think only in Earth they have house, oceans. But
in the heaven ,they were in open nature but there were no oceans and
houses. Generally, place of setting is in Earth and in Earth, Adam was
living with Eve as human. Narrator here is not Adam, then it is Eve.

Narrator "She unnames them" is Eve. She spoke about animals' name
and their names being mostly useless for them. And it was given from
the very start of the story.
"Most of them accepted namelessness with perfect indifference
with which they had so long accepted and ignored their names"
This sentence gives the clear message that the narrator doesn't
want to name animals. And then she describes many animals names and
speak about how useless to name . She starts with whales and dolphins
"Wales and dolphins, seals and sea other consented with particular
grace and alacrity, sliding into anonymity as into their element".
Then Eve spoke about yaks. She said that yaks at first protested
being unnamed . But then the concils of elderly females( I think
females there refer to females of yaks) thought that the names of yaks
are useful only for others but not themselves. At the end, all the
yaks also agreed with namelessness.
Narrator spoke about pets. She said that with pets have some
problem about namelessness.
"It was with the dogs, and with some parrots, love birds, ravens
and mynahs that the trouble arose. These verbally talented individuals
insisted that names were important to them, and flatly refused to part
with them. But as soon as they understood that the issue was precisely
one of individual choice."
In this part of work we see that according to thought of Eve, pets
don't want to unnamed, but at the end they realize that naming depends
on human beings not animals.
Eve also spoke about insects and fish's names and uselessness their
names.
Eve sees names as barrier standing between herself and animals.
Because with naming she feels hierarchy. But it doesn't fit her. So
she wants to be close to the animals. And with unnaming she feels
herself far closer than with their names. She said:
"They seemed far closer than when their names had stood between
myself and them like a clear barrier"
Then narrator goes to Adam and give back names to Adam which was
lend by God and Adam.
So I think the main reason for unnaming them is
1) Animals' names are useless for them(animals).
2) Eve wants to become closer to nature and forsake her domesticity.
As forsaking her domesticity I can say that after giving name back to
Adam as dept ,she goes away from house with animals.
3) Also there is woman reclaiming language. Names of all thing exist
in language. And according to Kuran God created Adam and then teach
him to name for all things and ask him to teach them to other angels.
Chapter2 Al Baqarah
[2:32] And He taught Adam all the names, then He put the objects of
these names before the angels and said, 'Tell Me the names of these,
if you are right,'
[2:33] They said, 'Holy art Thou! No knowledge have we except what
Thou hast taught us; surely, Thou art the All-Knowing, the Wise.'
[2:34] He said, 'O Adam, tell them their names;' and when he had told
them their names, He said 'Did I not say to you, I know the secrets of
the heavens and of the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you
hide?" ]
It was written in old Bible that , God created first animals, then
Adam, and then Eve.God allowed man to name all animals. So giving a
power of language to man ,that was not given to woman. And in this
short story ,Eve wants to reclaim this power(power of language) by
unnaming all animals which I explained it at the beginnings. And she
says;
"one of my reasons for doing what I did was that talk was getting
us nowhere".
Why she said it? Because man had created language. Language created
hierarchy; separation between humans, animals and other animals. So in
this point I can say ,man create hierarchy and hierarchy also shows
itself in language and names in language. And language create a
hierarchy between man and woman.
At the end, by unnaming animals she refuse Adam's language and joins
to animals. This act show that she refuse hierarchy and joins to
society where is not any classes or hierarchy. So you see , in this
point ,there appear 4th reason of unnaming animals by Eve.
4) She don't want hierarchy and she wants stable society.

When we get to know someone or something really well we sometimes use
a special name, a nick name. A nick name is really a name over and
above the name that something or someone already carries. The original
meaning of surname is that it is a re-naming, the placement of a
second name above or on top the first name. With the nickname, we
indicate our special relation to something or someone. We make our
world knowable by giving names, assigning labels to them. But
nicknames and proper names serve a special function. They re-name the
often more subjectively felt meanings of our relations with others
Giving names is a most peculiar act. We seem to rename when the usual
name is found to be lacking of something, Sometimes, ordinary words
have become too ordinary; we feel the need to get at what is unique,
personal, singular, un-translatable about that what we name. We could
push the problem further, beyond the cognitive toward the unnamable,
the pathic dimensions of life. In order to explore the living
relations we maintain with the world we first need to un-name things.
In the short story "She Unnames Them" the science fiction author
Ursula Le Guin hints at what happens in un-naming.
In a strange way, after the unnaming, things became indistinguishable
from one another. The desire to smell one another's smells, to feel or
rub of one another's scales, fur, feather, or skin now was so
immediate and created such sense of presence that she decided that she
could make no exception and she too needed to give back the name that
had been given to her.

hi,again.first of all,my dear teacher i want to thank you for the
exam.because it wasn't so hard as i expected.and, secondly about "she
unnames them" i want to say that Eve's unnaming everything is very
interesting.of course, the aim could be to make equality between
everything in the world.but, i think that if God wanted it he could do
it for himself.HE gave name them and for my opinion,he can unname
them.bye.
