Beenlooking at hayprocessors for the future. Looked at hay buster, highline etc. Some have feed chains others beaters. Tell me the pro and cons. Durability , service parts etc. Seems like those raddle chains are on 1" bearings. I want a strong long lasting model. Trouble free of course. So fire away. Like to have the ability for round and big squares as I buy my hay from different suppliers. Now I use round bale feeders and have minimal waste except manure cleanup. Like to spread that problem over the fields. rather than a turd hearse
I don't know much about the different processors, or shredders as we call them here, but highline seems to be the most popular. Haybuster and Bale king would be next. I know the highline has a beater and they got a knife on a long rod so it's fairly simple to cut the twines off of it. I haven't heard of too many issues with the newer HD highline shredder either. I think the older ones had bearing troubles.
We were thinking of buying a shredder for the times that we have old or dusty hay, but it didn't seem worth it for us. We just spread our hay over the pasture to spread out manure. The tractor works good but a grapple on the skid steer is the quickest and easiest way I found. Guys like the shredder for straw too but I can spread it even and quick with the ctl and not have to use the fork at all either.
Just got back from the haybuster factory ten minutes ago in Jamestown North Dakota . They are well built machines but some other brands are heavier. We run a 2650 haybuster. Run about 400 bales a year through it the other hay is fed in feeders. Very good machine but we had to go get a replacement rotor for it. I could have had the one in the machine fixed at their repair shop but they are shutting down for Christmas. A high line or Vermeer are good ones buti like the haybuster.
We also have a Haybuster 2650. We've had it for about 8 years and it hasn't let us down yet. Was using it to feed about 230 head of cows each winter. Since then we have moved up to a NDE vertical mixer. But we kept the Haybuster to do spot feeding and blowing out straw. Haven't been around any other hay processor but my sister worked for the IX ranch one winter and they had one that used beaters. Can't remember the brand I think it might have been a Degleman but she said it had trouble getting bales stuck between the beaters.
The shaft broke on the drive end of our rotor. They say some never break some do it is a big shaft also so being weak shouldn't be a problem. If we would have had our rotor out the factory would have fixed it for about 1/2 price but they are going on Christmas new year shutdown so we just ended up buying a new rotor. The newer 2655 have more flails so shred finer. I would recommend haybuster to you .was about a 100 new units lined up outside factory.
