Samhain Call
We are living in the dance of power and revolution. We are facing increasing repression and global devastation by the forces of greed asserting themselves against a growing awakening.
This transformation occurs at every level, from the global to the individual. The empire lives in all of us. We all experience its fall, as parts of each of us must die to make room for the emerging new cultures.
Now spirits are gathering from all over time and space; they have come to observe and to aid this transformation, and they have messages for us. We feel in our bones as in the stars that this is a potent time, an opportunity for the birth of the new world, if we will do the work to build it.
We must adapt to meet the challenges of changing ecosystems; take responsibility for our power to destroy; relearn reciprocity; and remember our sacred connection to the earth.
Our queer magic is powerful when we work together to create our own ceremonies to meet the needs of our communities. At Samhain time the veil between the worlds lifts. Together, we will step outside of time to open to the deep truth of universal love. We will gather to listen to the wisdom of our ancestral and spirit allies to help us meet the current crises; to honor the process of death; and to mourn the passing of so much that is familiar and beautiful.
On this land where we gather, the sun hangs lower in the sky, passing over the ridge sooner and sooner with each coming day. The growing roar of the creek signals the return of water to earth. The oaks shed their last fire-colored leaves to send energy and potency back to their roots. The squirrels, mouths full of acorns, scamper about, searching for the perfect hiding spot for their winter snacks. In this time, we draw nourishment from the rain soaked ground, from what we have stored deep in our roots. We sleep to the rhythmic chorus of crickets, making themselves known in the dark.
Like the bear people who return to their caves to dream, we human animals put to sleep many of the overextending projects that take so much of our time during the light part of the year. Instead, we shift our focus to the internal work of the mind and heart and the work of the home. We tell the stories of that which has lived and rejoice in the seeds and pleasure that foreshadow the rebirth of life in spring.
We reflect upon the work that has been done this past year: the new cabins that have been built, the food harvested from the greenhouse, the medicinal plants gathered and dried, and the fully stocked woodshed's promise of winter fire. Our work in this time is also the work of the hunt, the slaughter, and coming to terms with the death and decay that moves with us this time of year.
In the dark, we have fear. And sometimes we forget our deeper knowing. In the dark of the longest nights, our Ancestors call out to us, to remember… To remember who we are and where we came from. They whisper to prepare for what's coming, this Great Turning, this Great Awakening, this Great Mystery; and as the veils grow thin, as the last acorn falls, they ask us to shine our inner lights on them in celebration of death as a part of life, and to tend the portals between worlds with love and care.
As we approach Samhain, and the last harvest, we come together, we open our hearts, and as we listen, we think about these questions: What are your intentions for Samhain 2012? What do you bring that you have harvested during these blessed modern times of extreme abundance and scarcity? What conveniences and comforts will you give away to ensure future growth? What traditions will you honor, and what new traditions will you bring? How can we be in right relationship with each other, the land, and our ancestors? What question do you have for those who came before us and what do you wish to remember? What helps you see in the dark?
Because winter may come every year, but this kind of darkness is unprecedented. This kind of darkness asks us to feel what is immediately around us, to open with urgent love and pride to what is within arms reach. In this dark, we hold all differences, we hold all genders. * In order to stay warm, we light our inner candles, and we each bring all our light. We needfully sacrifice the privilege of independence from all our relations, and we hold ever tight. In the face of the dark, in the glimpse of not knowing, sensing the winds of the coming storm. We call ourselves home.
We are coming down from the mountains and our summer travels, from the places we have been gathering our food and rejoicing in light of the summer season. We come bearing what we have in abundance to share and what we have to sacrifice to the Samhain fire. It is time to return to the hearth, to celebrate with our family and tribe.

SOME THOUGHTS ON SUBSTANCES
These are our intentions for the use of medicines such as tobacco and other herbs and substances:
*To create a strong container and a clear conduit for our personal and tribal magic. *To respect the diversity of experiences, beliefs, and boundaries around substance use. *To support the healing work of those in recovery or struggling with addiction. *To honor the medicine spirits and to ask for their blessings.
COMMUNITY AGREEMENTS
We ask you to respect these agreements while at this Gathering:
*Please use all substances intentionally, mindfully, and with respect for yourself and those around you. *Please smoke only in these areas: In the Dirty Rabbit Hole, Maxy Pad, Behind Garden House On the South side of the firepit In the parking lot *Please DON’T smoke on the paths, at your campsite, in Garden House, in the Barn, or on the North side of the firepit. *Heart Circles are substance-free space. Please don't smoke, use, or be under the influence in those places. *Please use alcohol in moderation, and only in the parking lot. The exception is Libation Night, beginning after dinner on Saturday. Please remember to imbibe with intention. There will also be sober space available during this time. *Please be responsible for all items you bring to the Sanctuary. If you pack it in, pack it out. Please leave your camping space and our whole Sanctuary in a better condition than you found it.
Please NO:
*Speed, heroin, meth, or cocaine—not in you, not on you, not in your car. *Violence or intolerance. *Fire, smoking, candles, or incense on paths or at campsites. *Pets. Yes, your dog is lovely. But a dozen dogs in a barking, fighting, pooping pack? Not so lovely. For the safety and comfort of everyone at the Gathering, please leave your dog at home. A kennel is available in Merlin, the next town south, where you can board your furry loved one. It is called Creekside Boarding, (541) 471-7144, ask for Donna.
ITEMS FOR THE SAMHAIN FIRE
Please bring only natural safe burning items for our community cauldron. The Samhain fire consumes and transmutes that which we release there. Symbols are powerful; synthetics poison the air of your brother/sisters. We will have supplies for making non-synthetic fetish offerings to the fire which you can charge with your intent.
Don't Bring a Mess * Don't Be a Mess * Don't Leave a Mess
WANNA HELP OUT? Gatherings take work from everyone. We all put in our part and just a little bit more. There are always things that need to be done. Remember also that if you are new and perhaps don’t know what all the jobs are that can be done, don’t be afraid to ask. There are plenty of faeries around to teach you how to restock a shitter, cut wood, or get involved in ritual planning!
NOT SURE WHAT TO DO AT A GATHERING (OR BEFORE), HERE ARE SOME IDEAS! • FUN-Raisers: Organize delightful events to raise energy and money for the gathering and the Sanctuary. • Kitchen Queens: Help the kitchen flow smoothly. Plan menus, help with ordering, manage the kitchen, support the cooks. Mama Vi Knowing Looks (Audrey) is focalizing the food order. Please contact her if you want to cook a meal. • Cooks: Sign up with a couple of friends to cook a meal. Nourish your Faerie kin and make their tummies happy. • Flowmeister: Help people hook up with jobs needing to be done. Be the logistical lubricant that makes the whole gathering run smoothly. • Transportation Coordinator: Organize rides to & from Greyhound Grants Pass, Medford airport, Klamath Falls train station, and beyond. • Zombie Surgeon General: Make sure the first aid kits are stocked and organize other Zombie Nurses (first aid / emergency response). At the Gathering • Registration: Hang out at the Welcome Tent or the Barn to greet and orient new arrivals. • Templekeepers: Help clean and tend the Garden House and Barn • Firewood Czar: Organize woodcutting parties while looking all butch with a chainsaw. • Fire Tenders: Help with firewood and keep our tribal fires burning. • Dishwashers: Dishwashers eat first and are the sexiest faeries. • Garden/Greenhouse: The Sanctuary can always use help with permaculture projects. Please check with land fae before helping out. • Ritual Planning: Help hold the container and guide the energy for our communal magic. • Shitter Patrol: Keep our trusty shitters clean and well-stocked. A humble yet vital job. • Trash Hauler: Carry trash and recycling off the Land so we leave ZERO TRASH FOOTPRINT. • Zombie Nurses: Be a clear and grounded presence to safeguard your fellow Faeries.
Make this part of your intention today!!!
WORK WEEK: A lot of preparation goes into a gathering. Before these gatherings we have a work week, where people are welcome to come to the land and help out. Things that generally happen at work week can include chopping wood, getting food, stocking the shitters, generally sprucing up the place, and a whole lot of fun. Please be prepared to work if you come to the sanctuary early for the gathering.
Please register ahead of time! This gives the gathering committee an idea of how many folks will be blessing our gathering. If you register ahead of time, that means that we will have enough food, propane, and toilet paper to last the entire gathering.
