WoAD + Bluetooth + Kenwood D710

Does WoAD expect the Kenwood D710 to already be in KISS mode prior to starting a session?  Looking at the serial output from a session initiation it would seem so.  Does anyone know if there is a manual way to put the D710 in KISS mode (button press/hold combo, maybe) without using a terminal to issue KISS ON, RESTART commands?  I am attempting to use a DSD TECH SH-B30 for Bluetooth to RS232.  The SH-B30 has worked out well so far with the D710 & APRSdroid and I’m hoping to be able to use it with WoAD.

With the session protocol set to Packet, and the TNC type set to KISS, under the TNC configuration you should see options for "Device initialization". Setting the device manufacturer to Kenwood and device model to TM-D710 should allow WoAD to correctly configure the D710. You can also specify which band to use, power level, etc.

I have everything set as you describe.  When I connect the Bluetooth serial output to my PC and PuTTY vs the Kenwood D710 I do not see WoAD issue a TNC2 command of KISS ON and RESTART.  I only see what appears to be garbled text, which makes me think that WoAD is communicating with KISS and not TNC2.  Should I be able to see a KISS ON and RESTART in TNC2 format coming from WoAD?  How does WoAD correctly configure the Kenwood D710 to enter KISS mode?

The command sequence (from WoAD) should look something like as follows. 

0xC0 0xFF 0xC0 0xC0 0xFF 0xC0 0x0D (exit KISS mode)

0x03 0x03 0x03 (enter command mode)

TC 1
... (setting band, power, etc)
KISS ON
RESTART
However, WoAD will only progress to the next step if it sees the expected response from the other end. If you could send the PuTTY log and exact version of your D710 that might help narrow down the problem.

The  ÀÿÀ is the expected 0xC0 0xFF 0xC0. You can better see that if you open the generated putty.log file in a binary editor.

So the problem seems to be that the radio is not replying with the "cmd:" response that WoAD is expecting. As a result WoAD tries repeating the command 3 times and then gives up.

I had assumed this model behaved the same as other Kenwood models, but it looks like that is not the case. I'll try to dig up a D710 and get in a fix for the next release.

The Kenwood TM-D710 makes a different command set available depending on whether the serial connection is going to the display unit or the main unit. In order for WoAD to send the necessary commands the serial cable must be plugged into the display unit. Without any code changes that worked as expected, and so should be working in the current version of WoAD (1.4.68).

The only caveat is that WoAD is unable to set any of the channel settings (power level, VFO, MR, etc.) when connected to the display unit, and attempting to do so will result in a failure to setup the connection to the radio. These features will be removed from the next release.

With those points in mind, let me know if that works for you or you're still having problems.

Along this line, I just discovered that if you set up a session to use the D170’s B band it will instead use the A band.

I have the serial cable plugged into the display unit.  I believe my radio is already in cmd mode.  When I connect my laptop + PuTTY to the serial cable and hit enter I get a cmd: prompt.  When I power cycle the radio with the laptop still connected to the serial cable, I see this:

When I enter 0xC0 0xFF 0xC0 as the cmd prompt I get a ?EH response.

When I enter the KISS ON and RESTART commands I see the STA and CON icons blink six times; afterwards the terminal does not respond anymore.

Still having problems.  My D710 appears to be in CMD mode by default.  Is there a way to skip 0xC0 0xFF 0xC0 0xC0 0xFF 0xC0 0x0D (exit KISS mode) and 0x03 0x03 0x03 (enter command mode) and instead start with KISS ON, RESTART?

Could you attach an exported log file from WoAD?

Make sure that the Packet and Other Packet options are checked before you export the log.
