Hello good morning gentlemen.
Does anyone here have experience with the following?

• Amateur radio: WoAD Packet Mode (Samsung Galaxy) + APRS-K1 BTECH (Cable) + Handy VHF (Wouxum).
• Gateway: RMS Packet latest version (FT-857) + RMS Relay latest version + Soundmodem.

For my part, the calls enter the Gateway with some exchange messages between WoAD (SABM) and RMS Packet (UA, RR), but finally the WoAD does not continue with the process and the RMS Packet ends the communication (DM).

I do this to try to send an email from WoAD.

I don't know if WoAD actually recognizes the responses sent by the RMS Packet or if there is something that is not yet developed in the program or if I need to configure something.
I have made many modifications on the WoAD side.
On the RMS Packet side I have not changed anything because I have already checked it with Winlink Express Packet without problems.

Thanks for your help.
Cheers
Mauricio

I doubt you will have any success with this configuration. When using the APRS-K1, you are using the radio's VOX circuit for PTT. The Baofeng, Wouxum, and other Chinese radios have a fixed VOX delay, which is way too long for connected mode packet. It is technically too long for APRS as well, but since APRS uses UI frames, and no ACK is expected, having the transmitter hang on the air after the frame is sent does not directly impact the APRS report. It does potentially cause interference to the next station to transmit however. I do not recommend using the BTECH cable for any packet operations! If you have a radio like the Kenwood TH-F6A, it will work since you can set the VOX delay on the Kenwood to 250ms (still a bit long, but usually works). The Baofeng fixed delay is something like 1500ms, you will miss the ACK frame pretty much every time with that much delay.

Hi Mauricio,

As Scott pointed out it is generally better to explicitly trigger the PTT rather than relying on VOX, but if you're receiving UA and RR packets from the RMS then it sounds like things should be working.
If you could send your log file from a failed session (you can export it to a text file from the Log view's lower menu) I'd be happy to take a look at it.

All the best,

Andrew

Good point Scott.
In other cases I was testing with APRSDroid with the same cable and the same radio (Wouxum KG-UV6D)
I had no problem even if I was able to send an email.
The VOX setting on my radio is at the most sensitive level and the volume of my phone is high.

Yes, this is exactly what you will see happening from what I was describing. The client is sending SABM frames (a connection request). The gateway responds with a UA (acking the SABM), which should put the two stations in "connected" mode, but you see the client just keeps sending SABM frames. It is never seeing the UA response because the VOX delay has the transmitter still on when the UA frame arrives.

This has nothing to do with your level or VOX sensitivity. The adjustment you do not have on the radio is VOX Delay, it is fixed at something like 1500ms.

Sorry, but you will not get this configuration to work.

Dear friends, thanks for waiting, but finally I was able to make WoAD (Samsung Galaxy) work with my Handy Wouxum KG-UV6D and APRS K1 Cable.
I did a lot of tests adjusting the parameters in the programs (WoAD and RMS Packet/Soundmodem) and sending emails and even news queries and everything worked perfectly.
I think this could facilitate portability and minimize the equipment we carry when we go to the mountains or remote areas.
These settings did not affect the configuration of my other laptop station with Winlink Express and Packet Winlink.
I will post information in the next few days for everyone's clarity.
From now on I invite you to my YouTube channel SOTA CHILE.
Thank you for your advices.

Hi Mauricio,

Great to hear that you got things working with WoAD and K1 cable and thanks for having the tenacity to see it through. It would be great to see the settings that you used.

I noticed in your most recent video you were using a digirig, so you'll be glad to hear that the latest version of WoAD now allows triggering of the PTT through digirig and similar devices, through the RTS.

All the best,

Andrew

Team,

I am trying to update the packet destination. Gateways but not pulling any for packet, everything else works fine

Hi Andrew
Yes, indeed I can make WoAD (v1.67) work with the APRS-K1 cable (Vox control) for Winlink and on the other hand the Digirig (RTS control) with FT8 Radio (build 105).
For the first case, I am preparing a video tutorial that will help configure the three types of equipment taking into account Packet communication to facilitate VOX communication for Handy equipment:
• RMS Trimode
• Winlink Express
• WoAD for Android
I am preparing it during this week.

Greetings from Santiago, Chile.
