Hello all,

Thought this might help some of you. Finally got WoAD working with my HT on packet using the Digirig Lite through quite a bit of trial and error over the past few days.

Was having issues with the incoming audio not making it to the WoAD app, WoAD was receiving audio but only through the phone microphone and not from Digirig Lite. Through the coarse of trial and error I found out that I can get the audio input from my HT through the Digirig lite if I open a separate audio recording app I have and press record prior to opening the WoAD app.  If I open the recording app start to record, then open WoAD and start a new session everything works great!

The phone I'm using is a Kyocera Duraforce Ultra 5G with Android version 12 firmware.

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Bill,

Many thanks for taking the time to work this out and the detailed info together with the suggested work around.

When plugging in the Digirig Lite all sound (both incoming and outgoing) should be automatically rerouted through it. It is possible to disable this functionality from the Developer Options on the Android device - but it doesn't sound like this is what is going on in your case. That said, if you already have Developer options enabled on your phone you might want to confirm that you don't have "Disable USB audio routing" enabled.

Presumably the audio recording app is forcing the phone to use the USB audio routing, which then applies to all other apps as well. Am I right in thinking that you only need to press record in the recording app once and then every time you start WoAD the audio is routed correctly each time? Do you need to apply this trick every time the Digirig Lite is unplugged from the phone and then plugged in again?

All the best,

Andrew

Thank you Bill for your curiosity and persistence.  I have been trying to get Woad and APRSDroid to work with my Digirig since April.  Send is fine, but receive isnt happening.

I wonder if there is a change that can be built into Woad for an on-board tweak to do what the Recording software does.

Hi Bill and Kevin,

For the next release of WoAD I've added an "Audio devices" option which should allow you to select the desired audio device, from a list of the currently available options.
This will only be present for devices running Android 12 (API 31) and higher, as the necessary functionality was only introduced in that release. Not sure how well this will work as it is vendor specific, as it does seem that a lot of vendors do not yet properly implement the interface to the actual hardware.

Bill, if you could let me know the name of the audio recording app you refer to, that might me help track down the problem, and implement a work around in WoAD.

All the best,

Andrew

Hello
I have a SSB icom HF 802 radio and a SCS PACTOR III USB with it

I previously ran Winlink on a Windows computer which worked fine. Now I am using a Rav7 Android I pad and WoAD.
telnet sessions work fine (when tablet is connected to internet).
But I cannot get to receive the WoAD anything through the SSB or PACTOR. I heard that the Mobilinkd TNC App would make that connection via Bluetooth but not via USB cable.
is there any other App I can use that would generate this TNC link between radio and WoAD ?
What are the correct settings in WoAD?
pTTUSB enabled but no USB port can be selected?
WoAD states when I try to start the session that no USB port has been specified

As we live on a sailboat and get essential weather information through this system I am not likely to give up on this
Any thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Hi Stephanie,

There is no explicit support for PACTOR devices yet within WoAD.

The SCS PACTOR III does support KISS mode, which should allow it to work with WoAD, but switching the device into KISS mode would have to be done outside of WoAD. However, it should be noted that when using KISS mode you'll only have access to packet-radio (and not PACTOR) modes.

Once the SCS is in KISS mode, a session should be created within WoAD of type KISS. The Connection type should be set to USB and under Connection configuration you should select the USB port. If the PACTOR USB port is using a non-standard device then it may not be recognized by WoAD. If you send me the VID and PID of the PACTOR device I would be happy to add support for that to WoAD. There are apps in the Google Play Store that provide the necessary info (e.g. USB Device Info by A. Schillings) or you can use the Device Manager in Windows.

Hope that helps,

Andrew

I should also add that the Android device needs to support USB OTG mode. As far as I'm aware this shouldn't be a problem for any modern phone, but could be an issue for older tablets.
