My Samsung Galaxy S22+ phone (Android 16) has WoAD version 1.5.22 installed and Google Play says it is up to date.  I see on the version website that v1.5.23 (01/16/26) and v1.6.1 (02/04/26) and v1.6.2 (02/05/26) have been released. What is the latest supported version and how do I install it (hopefully without clearing all my existing app history)?

My understanding is that Google Play gets updates later than they appear on Github, due to various reasons.
I can tell you, from experience, that you do NOT want to mix Github & playstore versions.  That is, installing the Github version atop the playstore version results in neither one working, until you uninstall both, lose all your data, and then reinstall one version.

Thank you, and to the app author: This would be good information to post on the version website (not in any way related to GitHub there) as I also cleared all app history by uninstalling and mixing releases from the website Download page and Google Play.  If correct, it seems like "Don't mix releases from Google Play and this website" should be on both Google Play and the website.

As noted, WoAD downloaded from the WoAD website as an apk file and WoAD installed from the Google Play Store do not get along. Switching from one to the other will require you to first uninstall, losing all your configuration settings, messages, etc.

If you are downloading from the Google Play Store there are typically two tracks active at any one time. By default you will be downloading the release track. If you value stability then simply remain on this track. If however, you need some feature in a more recent release version of WoAD you can sign on to the open testing track from your Play Store account. As the name implies, this may come at the cost of less stable behavior. Typically I wait until I'm reasonably confident a new version is stable before promoting it from the open testing track to the release track. This means that some versions are never made available on the release track.

WoAD downloaded from the WoAD website as an apk file is (or has always been so far) on the open testing track.

All the best,

Andrew

Thank you Andrew and I want to be sure you saw my main point -- This would be good information to post on the version website ... and the website Download page and at Google Play.  It might keep others from losing all their data like at least two of us have.
