Still learning and WoAD has been great so far, I have been using Telnet.

I am looking to try it with my Radio and I wondered if anyone has some tips, or cables they use, I am looking at the BTECH APRS-K1 Audio Cable.

Right now I have a Baofeng GT-3  Mark-II, looking to upgrade at some point but doing my testing with this.

Also wondered if anyone has a screenshot of what your setting should be when using a cable to the radio for WoAD, to be able to send.

Thanks,

Norman

Hi Norman,

Here are my notes to get that working:
WOAD on Nokia 53 smartphone, settings as on page 47 Packet (outgoing) in the WOAD-manual
HT is a Wouxun KG-UV9D(E)Plus
The connection between the Nokia smartphone and the HT is a "Baofeng Tech BTECH APRS-K2 Cable"
Volume on 1 to 2 hours
Vox (menu 7)=7
Vox delay (menu 37) OFF -> this setting was crucial for success after weeks of trying...
W/N (menu 4) NARROW
via on0sea, over a path of 28km, with 4 watts, HT is connected to a Diamond V-2000 antenna on the balcony. I'm living on the top-floor with clear view in that direction.

This setup also works with other apps including AndFLMsg (basically FLDIGI on Android) in MFSK32 to send pictures over 2 meter FM...

Hope that helps, It works for me...

Thanks,

So far no luck for me, but for the Vox delay, there is no setting for that on my Baofeng so could be the issue, I will keep testing and send and update if I find something that works.

Hi Jef,

Thanks for your helpful notes.  I have been working with Norman on understanding Woad.  As he indicated, it works very well with Telnet.  However, achieving a connection via the K-2 cable......  So far? No go.  The K-2 cable has worked ok with AndFlmsg, but that is another story.

The radio; Baofeng GT-5R, 5W; a supposedly FCC legal version of the UV5-R.  It is connected to an exterior Ed Fong tri-band J-pole which has worked very well in our terrain; connecting to repeaters ~70km distant at 50W  V/UHF  and ~50km distant  at 25W 1.25m.  When connected to a 5W hand held,  good signal on simplex and repeaters near the Winlink node.

Receiving node; about 24 km distant along the Columbia River.  Terrain, sort of like a fjord; flat along the water (except when the wind is blowing); elevation ~150m elevation at sending and receiving ends, with a bend to navigate, a ~900m bump, at about half the distance.

Radio set up;
  • power 5W
  • VOX tested at 1, 2 & 7
  • SQL at 1
  • could not find VOX delay but tested TOT at 15 and "OFF."
Android phone;
  •  Samsung Galaxy S10e, notifications off, volume ~60% of full.
WoAD;
  • Auto-connect; at app startup
  • Name; Session  (the default name?)
  • Protocol; Packet
  • Type; Outgoing
  • Settings; KE**** [via KA7HRC] [Audio (AFSK, 1200 bps)]
  • Auto-connect; At app startup and every 60 minutes
  • Notes; ---
Results (second handheld served as monitor)
  • press START; high pitched "beeep" lasting about 1/4 second, repeats every few minutes, suspected tone for opening vox; tested keying the mike and then pressing START, same result
  • no buzzing typical of Wwinlink messages on this session, the buzzing had occurred on previous attempts.
Anyway, those are the results.  Any ideas as to why no connection with the gateway much appreciated.    Thanks in advance for any assistance.
