Anyone know the ideal distance from the gateway for messaging?   My nearest gateway is shown as 65km away.   I have tried a 5w HT and even the 50W Icom 2200H and 5100A.

I have updated my location and updated the channel list.

I have been unsuccessful in sending messages via WinLink or WoAD.
Telnet works fine, of course.

I've cked every quick start guide and youtube video I can find.  Any insights will be appreciated.

You need to be within line-of-sight to the gateway antenna.

Others here with more knowledge may correct me, but 3-5 miles with an 5 watt HT and possibly twice that distance on 50 watts.  Like MT said, it is all a matter of one of sight.

However, when I was fighting to get my WoAD working, the nearest gateway was over 65 miles away and I thought I was out of luck.  But one of my local hams said any packet station and /or digipeater will work.  I am successful hitting a local packet digipeater and a local RMS RMS station.  I hope this helps!

In Winlink, are you using VARA FM, or packet?  If you are using VARA FM, it has a "ping" feature (eponymous button).  You enter the callsign of the target gateway, press the plug con, and it tells you whether that station can hear you.

Antenna is everything. I see your QRZ that says around Lynchburg. It's hilly and your station is in a valley. The repeater is on top of a building but behind a hill. You have a tough time connecting.

Our main Winlink Gateway is at about 3000 ft in the mountains. I live in a senior apartment, I have no outdoor antenna. I use a dual yagi and one of those TV lead ribbon Jpole from the ground floor. I can't reach the 3000 FT Gaeway yet I can reach a Winlink Gateway 60-mile plus station on an island out in the ocean near Vancouver Island.

Is there a way to view the gateways on a map so I can more easily discern if any are likely obstructed from my QTH?

However, in Winlink Express, you can right-click on the message, arrow down to the map and it will show the station. I don't know how Andrew can do this with WOAD.

I've added the ability to show a map with the user's and gateway's location to the list of items on the WoAD possible future features list.

All the best,

Andrew
